Hatfill Gives Press Conference
Fox news | 08-25-02 | Steve Hatfill

Posted on 08/25/2002 11:33:25 AM PDT by at bay

Just watched the Hatfill press conference. FBI continuing on its theory that this was something that originated from the US and that Atta must have had athlete's foot or something. Hatfill, if innocent, is rightly indignant at his treatment.

Having been the focus of a crank letter investigation, one mistake Hatfill is making is offering handwriting exemplars. Handwriting analysis is no recognized science and the FBI will surely have personel that are willing to say he is the maker of the letters. In my case the investigators went to several labs who turned thumbs down on id'ing me, and they finally found a stooge at the Postal Inspectors office in San Bruno willing to give them his say so. Only when the stooge's own teacher expressed doubts as to the handwriting analysis was the case dropped. I later sued for arrest without probable cause and won, but was hardly compensated for being jailed for a month. The FBI is a vengeful organization that deals with its critics regardless of the passage of time. See "Tainting Evidence" the book about the phony FBI crime lab.

There's another thread re: this if you wonder where everyone is. BTTT. I think they're trying to set up Ashcroft so they can try to remove him as usag when they return from their vacation. Hatfill is just a pawn but there's something odd going on. The only time I hear about Hatfill is from Hatfill. If he doesn't want attention, get off of my tv!

For research purposes, did anyone catch the name of Hatfill's attorney? I bet he's from a klintoon law firm, like Kendall's or Boies. I think it was spelled Ginsberg, Esq. It'd be easy to find him on a law firm search if we had his first name. Then, how hard would it be to connect him to klintoon and carville? Not very... Fv

He spoke not of himself but of the treatment a "person of interest" gets. People wrongfully accused should not crawl into a cave but come out fighting. If they have a case against him, charge him. Why you are bothered by presumably innocent people who have been smeared in the press going public with their protestations of innocence is beyond me. Hope it never happens to you, you might be singing praises to the ACLU like you never imagined.

Hatfill's getting the Richard Jewell treatment from the FBI, complete with strategic leaks to the press. If he wants his side of the story to have a chance, getting in front of the camera is his only option.

From my perspective, which is living in Florida and reading Fla. papers, etc., we are not getting wind of the smearization of Steven Hatfill. The only time I see him is when he holds a press conference.

Where are the other nineteen? Are they going to hold press conferences too? Finally, we do not know if the FBI who have been handling this matter are clinton holdovers or not and if somebody's going to hold a press conference like Hatfill just did and mention a commandment, they should at the least make sure they pick the right one and the crocodile tears - that's where he lost me. ALL MY OPINION. You can hold an opposite view. Time will tell what's really going on.

Fregards, from a Southwest Airlines random searched passenger twice. I've been pulled from the line and that was more inconvenient than a useful exercise in safety. You don't hear me saying how glad I was to do it.

No reflection on Soutwest, but your mention of random searches reminded me. I've been wondering if anyone who was pulled out for the search has ever had the nerve to ask to see the screener's green card :)

I read very little of our liberal south Florida press, but have seen enough about this poor guy I thought he was guilty. Now I have changed my mind, at least about the evidence against him and the way he has been treated. I admire his courage for fighting back. Too many of us are supporting anything the administration does sort of like the Clinton backers did ,I'm afraid.

US firm in Pakistan gets anthrax letter

Muhammad Najeeb in Islamabad

Two anthrax attack cases involving multinational companies, including an American firm, have occurred in Pakistan, but officials are trying to keep them under wraps for reasons unknown, reports said.

A report in The News and the Jang dailies said last week senior executives at two business organisations in Karachi -- an international bank and a computer-marketing firm -- received international mail that carried anthrax spores with some powdery material.

A number of staff members at both the organisations are now being treated for anthrax.

A senior staff member at the main laboratory of the Aga Khan University and Hospital in Karachi said tests have revealed that one of the two mails was loaded with anthrax, while the other had traces of the bacterium.

Medical experts say since the first cases of anthrax have already been confirmed in Pakistan, authorities must immediately launch a public awareness exercise as almost all forms of anthrax, if caught early, can be cured.

Yes, the "person of interest" argument was very powerful! I do think he made a GOOD case contrary to the other posters who think he damaged himself. Ashcroft NEEDS to answer as far as I'm concerned! We've seen this scenario by the Feds too many times: Jewell, Waco, etc.

Anthrax mailed to Pakistan's Jang group

Nov 1,2001

A major publication group in Pakistan, Jang, has put its staff on antibiotics and hired a top microbiologist to disinfect its main editorial room in Karachi, after tests confirmed that the powdery substance sent along with a press release earlier contained anthrax spores.

The anthrax scare that hit the American media has spread to the Pakistan press as well, The News, part of Jang publications said on Friday, confirming that envelopes containing anthrax spores were received in the group's offices at Karachi, Quetta, Rawalpindi and London.

However, none of the employees exposed to the mail has tested positive for anthrax so far, it said.

But the staffers of the Jang in Karachi were put on antibiotics.

The News in a report also said that top microbiologists made staffers vacate the main editorial rooms in Karachi.

"The lab tests on Thursday confirmed that the white powdery substance has anthrax spores. We have hired Aga Khan Hospital's microbiologists to disinfect our main editorial sections," the newspaper quoted a management official as saying.

"We have advised our workers to be on high alert especially when they handle mail," the report added.

The measures were taken after tests confirmed that a press release received by one of the newspaper's reporters on October 23 contained anthrax spores.

So far, Pakistan has two confirmed cases of anthrax. Both were reported from multinational companies in Karachi after their staff received mail with anthrax spores.

Ashcroft is not dumb enough to believe Hatfill is responsible for the anthrax mailings in Pakistan. So much for bringing his "Christian" values to the Department of Justice. At least he covered up the naked statue. Reno would be proud of his performance in the Hatfill case.

Hatfill Files Complaint on FBI Probe
Sun Aug 25, 2:20 PM ET

By RON KAMPEAS, Associated Press Writer

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - The biowarfare expert under scrutiny in the anthrax attacks declared, "I am not the anthrax killer," and lashed out Sunday against Attorney General John Ashcroft ( news - web sites) for calling him a "person of interest" in the investigation.

Dr. Stephen J. Hatfill said the FBI ( news - web sites) has agreed to his offer to provide blood and writing samples. He said he wants the results released and has offered to waive privacy rules to allow that.

Yeah, well.. he should go after the FBi hammer and thongs. And keeping in the public eye may well keep him alive, as well.

I've been given to understand that Barbara Hatch Rosenberg, the woman whose report is underpinning much of the witch-hunt against him, is actually an old girlfriend of his who has been after him for years. This could become real interesting and earn the bureau the kind of black eye it certainly doesn't need right now.

I've dealt with different bureaucracies at various times. It's no picnic. I don't even like to get a parking ticket. But my point is that if there were twenty persons of interest, he was not singled out, meaning as "the only one".

Fox News channel now reports that the FBI does not comment on matters like this. Of course not - legally, that would be more leaking. Maybe they're after someone else who's a person of interest and the twenty number is window dressing.

Today, he stated "I am not the anthrax killer." But, maybe he's a person of interest because unbeknownst to him, someone else he knew is a suspect and that person is in the group of twenty also.

It will make more sense later on. Meanwhile, he's going to try to make trouble for Ashcroft with the help of a dem klintoon type attorney. You know when something gets broken at home and all the kids quickly say "not me". This is what we have here. It doesn't mean the entire group of 20 are innocent but the other 19 aren't holding press conferences. Does this guy want to write a book or something?

Hatfill may be an innocent pawn in a clinton holdover setup of Ashcroft. Look at how successful he was today in convincing everyone that Ashcroft is a bad guy. The clinton holdovers in the FBI, at justice and the DNC would love to bring Ashcroft down. This may be step one.

Wait until the Senate gets back from vacation. They FINALLY have an issue for the primaries and then the November elections. You see, this is not just about Hatfill IMO. It's scorched earth politics. They can't get Dubya's poll numbers down and they are desperate to hold on to seats in November. Attacking Dubya hasn't worked so, Aschcroft is next - it seems to be more effective.

Further, I am not a broken glass Republican. I filled out my RNC census form and I criticized the RNC for being more centrist than I like and for not supporting the more conservative candidates in primaries. And, those weren't even on the survey. I added those comments in red magic marker lol. FV

The second time I was pulled, I immediately uttered "s**t" but nobody heard me because the plane had just arrived and it was noisy. Considering all the junk I had packed into my bags, my utterance was appropriate. If someone would have actually heard it, maybe I would have been detained. Well, Janet did leave a big mess with a little help from Louis Freeh over at the FBI. I'm withholding judgment on this matter. I don't know what kind of games have been played with Hatfill's life but some people have a breaking point and obviously, this didn't roll off of Hatfill. Now he is obsessed with the entire matter to the point of getting counsel.

Saying that this rises to an ethics violation by Ashcroft may get heard but Hatfill will lose. That's the way it will come down IMO, but the dems will definitely use this issue all during the primaries and November elections. HATFILL HANDED THEM AN ELECTION ISSUE. "Here you go Mr. MacAuliffe, at your service."

My wife and I watched Hatfill speak during lunch (had it on Fox News). Almost at the same time, we shouted "Richard Jewell"! To those who think Hatfill is guilty, I don't understand. This man clearly and articulately spelled out how he is being wronged. If the FBI think he did it, then charge him.

If there's a Clinton angle to this, I contend there are Clintonites in DOJ who are running the presecution of this man, and do not want to look at the evidence showing Mohammed Atta's involvement, because it makes the government look bad. Yup, it just HAD to be a white right-winger, can't possibly be an Islamic fundy terrorist who died in 9/11. That would make us look like fools.

Those that looking for a Clinton connection are whistling in the dark. They do not want to admit that there is a possibility that Ashcroft has been misled by the FBI. After Ruby Ridge and Jewell, you would think the American people would at least question the FBI.

Look at the Boston case, a man served 20 years or so for a murder the FBI knew he did not committ. Anymore, I have little use for the FBI.

The Hatfill Case: Essential Background
This extensive background may seem a little academic, but it is absolutely essential to understand the current controversy swirling around Steven Hatfill, the bioweapons scientist who called a press conference to complain that he was "the currently designated fall guy" for the anthrax letters in the wake of September 11. Everyone involved understands that he was designated the fall guy not so much by the FBI but by none other than Barbara Hatch Rosenberg of the FAS.

In November 2001, a month after the rash of anthrax attacks, Ms. Rosenberg was already telling an audience in Geneva that New York "has been attacked, first by foreign terrorists, then by an American using a weaponized biological agent." She assured listeners that the anthrax "was derived, almost certainly, from a U.S. defense laboratory."

Anyone that thinks this FBI is any different than the FBI of Janet Reno's days has only to consider the unbelievable foul up in the case of these missing Oregon girls. The bodies of these girls are likely to be found right under the very noses of the FBI at property owned by a excon who had previously been reported by one of the girls to have attempted to assault her. If these poor children are found on that property (it was only a matter of yards from where they lived) while the FBI was no doubt following the advise of some profiler that the killer was some right wing extremist.

Thanks.
The more I research this, the more I think this is a slam job.
And I am getting angry.

Here's another from Mona Charen:

August 19, 2002

Something fishy in the Hatfill case?

Mona Charen

Dr. Steven Hatfill may or may not be the killer who sent anthrax through the mail last year. But something smells about the way the FBI is handling this matter.

Without arresting him, a researcher who never worked with anthrax, and even without calling him a suspect — merely one of 20 "persons of interest" — the FBI apparently tipped off the press when it made a scheduled search of Dr. Hatfill's apartment.

When the FBI agents arrived, they were accompanied by satellite trucks and news helicopters buzzing overhead. What if they are wrong? Will the press ever correct with the same vigor that it misreports? Almost never — the Richard Jewell case being the only exception that leaps to mind, and he had to sue. More often, the unjustly accused have no recourse. In the immortal words of Ray Donovan, Ronald Reagan's labor secretary who was acquitted of corruption charges in a court of law after a prolonged trial by media, "Where do I go to get my reputation back?"

A spokesman for the FBI denies tipping the press, but those helicopters and news trucks did not arrive due to clairvoyance. Not only does it look like the FBI was fingering a man against whom it has very little evidence in order to obscure the FBI's lack of progress in finding the anthrax terrorist or terrorists, it further looks like the FBI has bullheadedly followed only one possible scenario — the lone American scientist — in its search.

The Weekly Standard's David Tell has waged a lonely battle to challenge the FBI on this. In a series of detailed articles (see the Weekly Standard, April 29, 2002), Tell has examined the FBI's peculiar reliance on research professor Barbara Hatch Rosenberg of the State University of New York at Purchase. She has apparently encouraged the FBI to believe a disgruntled American scientist loosed anthrax on the political and media elite last year.

Her views sound a bit loopy to the dispassionate observer. She apparently told the BBC that the FBI has known the true identity of the anthrax mailer for some time but won't arrest him because "he knows too much." Well, let Mr. Tell tell: "Last fall, you see, the man's Langley masters supposedly decided they'd like to field-test what would happen if billions of lethal anthrax spores were sent through the regular mail and it was 'left to him to decide exactly how to carry it out.' The loosely supervised madman then used his assignment to launch an attack on the media and Senate 'for his own motives.' And, this truth being obviously too hot to handle, the FBI is now trying hard not to discover it."

 Okaaaay.

Then there is the matter of Syed Athar Abbas, a Pakistani picked up for defrauding two banks out of $100,000 and running a sophisticated check-kiting scheme. Tell reports that when the FBI checked him out, it discovered he had purchased a "fine food particulate mixer" (the sort that might be used for making biological weapons) for about $100,000 in cash. Was the FBI interested, or was it too busy chasing Dr. Hatfill?

To read Dr. Hatfill's statement is to suspect very strongly that the man is innocent. If I were wrongly accused, I think I would write a statement like his. Some excerpts: "I've devoted much of my professional career to safeguarding men, women and children from the scourge of different types of disease, from leukemia to infectious disease. I am appalled at the terrible acts of biological terrorism that have caused death, disease and havoc in the great country starting last fall. I wish the authorities Godspeed in catching the culprit or culprits. I do not object to being considered a subject of interest by the authorities because of my knowledge and background in the field of biological warfare defense. This does not, however, give them the right to smear me and gratuitously make a wasteland of my life. If I am a subject of interest, I'm also a human being. I need to earn a living [he's been fired from two jobs due to this investigation]. I have a family, and until recently, I had a reputation and a bright professional future."

If the FBI has screwed this up, heads should roll, starting with Director Robert Mueller's.
