A bump for Virginia Dare.... I happened to be down on Roanoke Island back on Aug. 18th on the observance of her birthday.
She was born 415 years ago in 1587.

LOL. I never thought of that!

Thank you for remembering her. Growing up in eastern NC, Virginia Dare and the myriad Lost Colony legends captivated many young imaginations.
Did you see Andy Griffith when you visited Manteo? (smile)

Where in eastern NC?
I grew up in Edgecombe County and now live there with my wife & daughter.
Yes, I also found it fascinating growing up.
Funny you should mention it, Andy Griffith was down there that very weekend too.
He was dedicating the new Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge along w/ Governor Mike "Taxes" Easley & Sen. Marc Basnight.
I've never met him, but some of my friends down there (locals) have.

I grew up in Bertie County, on the western edge of the Great Dismal Swamp. (smile)

Cool.
I have a friend whose family (Asbell) is originally from there.
Take care,

I am not an archaeologist but I worked with one one on six digs. I can't believe they allowed the archaeologist to take those artifacts to Florida. A archaeologist can do the research from colored photos and notes...they don't even have a legal document showing ownership...why should they trust him? He hasn't even done his field reports.

I don't know the NC law on that, but I think it was found on private property.
I do know that some
state archaeology laws apply only to state property.

I agree, Sounds suspicious. Return the damn thing and others can study it too.

"Ping for our resident archaeologists." Lol, I'm a retired chip maker interested in anthropology/archaeology only.

I know, I read your profile before... I know it's just an avocation for you.
I've said to my wife on several occasions that in a perfect world my job would be as an archaeologist or historian.
Alas, responsibility. :)

"I've said to my wife on several occasions that in a perfect world my job would be as an archaeologist or historian." Yup. I should have gone in that direction also. Anthropology is my first interest though.

Our digs were on private property and paid for with local donations....but the archaeologist did file the proper papers informing the state of a legal dig and we had a State dig# that applied to all four of our digs because they were in the same area...I had to check with the Gas,telephone and city utilities to make sure of that no utilities were buried underground...that also fell under a legal number...The archaeologist worked for us and the artifacts belonged to our city...it was decided in advance that the best of the artifacts would be placed in our museum...which is not supported by the state in any way... I was in charge of the site and the digs and the crew and the artifacts.
