We Will Prevail - speech by Solicitor General Theodore Olson
Wall St. Journal ^ | Wednesday, September 11, 2002 | Solicitor General Theodore Olson

From a speech by Solicitor General Theodore Olson to the Federalist Society on Nov. 16, 2001. Mr. Olson's wife, Barbara, was one of the airplane passengers murdered on Sept. 11, 2001.

September 11, 2001 was unprecedented in our nation's history. Our country has been attacked before. Our soldiers and innocent citizens have been the victims of terrorism before. But never before in our history have so many civilian citizens, engaged in the routines of their daily lives, who neither individually nor collectively had done anything to provoke the savage attack that they were to experience that day, been brutally murdered for the simple reason that they were Americans, and because they stood, in their countless individual lives, for all the things that America symbolizes.

Don't know if this speech to the Federalist Society on Nov. 16, 2001 has been posted on here before.

His remarks pretty much hit the nail on the head.

"Our Constitution -- always with the support of our people -- has extended its embrace to the unpopular, the unusual, the unconventional and the unorthodox. We protect not only those who will not salute our flag, but those who would spit upon it or burn it. We pledge our allegiance to a Constitution that shelters those who refuse to pledge their allegiance to it."

Big BKO bump. Wish we could drum up Ted's email address so we could let him know how fondly his wife is remembered.

"Ronald Reagan often said that "every once in a while, each of us native-born Americans should make it a point to have a conversation with someone who is an American by choice." Mr. Reagan was fond of quoting from a letter he received from a man who wrote, "you can go to live in Turkey, but you can't become a Turk. You can't go to live in Japan and become Japanese, [and so on for Germany, France, etc.]. But . . . anyone from any corner of the world can come to America and be an American."

Lump-in-the-throat BUMP for Ted and The Gipper.

America will not lose this war because we cannot even consider that we will lose what centuries of Americans fought to create, improve and maintain. We cannot, and we will not, betray the people who gave us this glorious heritage. We cannot and will not, dishonor or wash away the memories of those who somehow clawed their way out of poverty, tyranny and persecution to come to this country because it was America, and because they were willing to risk death to become Americans, and to give their children and grandchildren the opportunity and freedom and inspiration that makes this place America. Americans could no longer call themselves Americans if they could walk away from that legacy.

HUGE Ted and Barbara Olson BUMP for VICTORY in this war against tyranny and terrorism!!

Thanks, Ragtime!

So it is a particularly sad and a bitter irony that the 19 savages who took the lives of thousands of Americans were able to come here because we welcomed them, and trusted them, and allowed them to learn to fly our airplanes and gave them the freedom to travel. They took these precious gifts and turned them into instruments of hatred and death.

Isn't this too true?

Thanks for the ping, OWF.

He sure pumps up the "Illusion" of the America we wish for.

But he left out that our Freedoms have become illusions , that America's Churches have become the State churches that early American's were trying to escape.

And that these American's happened to be in the buildings that represent the internationalists who are after global monopolies , regardless of human costs.

Which to me makes the American's who died in the Towers , victims of the same internationalists.

You won't hear this on the news , but you will here them defending the internationalists , saying it had nothing to do with their foreign policy.

I sure miss seeing Barbara's big smile and listening to her common sense analysis of issues.

Learning of her death was the first thing to 'put a face' on the attacks of 9/11. I couldn't help but feel that I knew her, in spite of the fact that I had only seen her on TV. And Ted's strong, loving grief was overwhelming.

We are indeed fortunate to have men (and women) of his caliber in this incredible administration.

And sadly enough I fear, by the time he's 52 he won't be able to tell the difference. We have freedoms now, yes, much more than the former Soviet Union. But the way the majority of the public in their respective states is willing to hand over power all in the name of safety, there's not in the way of freedom the next generation will have

It's people like You who keep saying America is better than other countries and keep accepting less and less that help the politicians succeed.

Why don't you talk to some older Russians or Germans or other Europeans , to find out why they can't own any property. Or leave an inheritance.

It's happening here and You accept it.

Thank You for keeping our country strong.

But You wouldn't know anything about that , because conspiracies don't really exist.

Thanks for the heads-up, RC.

The victims were of all races, backgrounds, religions, ages and qualities. They had one thing in common. They were nearly all Americans. Their lives were extinguished because they were the embodiment of the aspirations of most of the world's peoples. The people who killed them hate the beacon that America holds out to people who are impoverished, enslaved, persecuted and subjugated everywhere in the world.

A magnificent speech worthy of the Gipper. I can give it no higher praise.

While there are those that hate us for our foreign policy, these people do not hate us for our foreign policy - they hate us because we are powerful and able and not muslim. The springboard of Bin Ladin against because we attacked Iraq, or opposed Iraq in Kuwait, but rather because we, as non-muslims, set foot in Saudi Arabia - and because the muslim states were powerless to deal with the problem themselves. In short, we are hated by these groups more because we exist than for anything we have done, or even might do.

If I heard them say it , I would believe it.

But all I've heard about are a few tapes , tapes that would not be admissable in our courts.

If what You say is true then we have some people living here that need to be sent elsewhere.

Believe me I'm not afraid to fight , I just want to know who the real enemy is and why.

That is of course provided we have the time to know.

Twenty-four Canadians were included in the WTC toll, IIRC.

Just including this for the record.
I wouldn't be suprised if some of them were like two of my cousins...transitioning
