US transsexual wins battle to become beautician

A transsexual who was barred from enrolling at a school for beauticians in the US state of California has won a legal battle to be allowed to attend classes, the transsexual and her lawyers said Monday.

The breakthrough came when the would-be beauty specialist, identified only as Sandy, reached a settlement with a chain of Los Angeles beauty schools after she sued the school for discrimination when it denied her admission.

"Today, it's a big time for me," said Sandy, who was born a man but who is in the process of undergoing a sex change operation.

She said she was "very happy about the result of my settlement. I hope people who are in my circumstance can have more chances and be treated in the right way, like I am at this moment," she told a press conference here.

Sandy sued the school in August under a Los Angeles city ordinance that bars businesses from discriminating on grounds of sexual orientation, and protects people "projecting a self-image both associated with one's biological maleness or one's biological femaleness."

The aspirant beautician took a test, paid a $100 registration fee and signed up with Marinello, but was rejected in a phone call from the school the same day after a passport photograph revealed she was born as a man, according to the lawsuit.

A representative of the school could not be reached for immediate comment and Sandy's attorney Gloria Allred said most of the terms of the settlement were confidential.

Allred said the case was the first civil action based on the city's sexual orientation, anti-discrimination ordinance.

"I want to be a hairstylist and I am very excited that I will have the opportunity to go to this excellent school to learn the necessary skills to achieve my dream," Sany told reporters.

Icky as this whole business is, there's no reason in principle for this person not to be alllowed to become a licensed beautician. To serve a certain niche market, presumably.

I think the school was wrong. There are both male and female hair stylists. It makes no difference what sex the born was born. They are just there to train people to cut hair.

I think the school was wrong.

I strongly disagree. If the school (as a privately held property) chooses to refuse entry to dishonest people (he is trying to pass himself off as a women when he's a man) then no one should be able to force the school to accept them. How can they ever trust this man in anything he does if he is already living in disguise?

At the very worst he's dishonest, at the very best he's mentally unstable. Neither is a good prospect for a student

God Save America (Please)

Who would've thought that a transsexual could not become a beautician in California, of all places? (I would've thought that 50% of their beauticians were transsexuals by now.)

I find the whole concept nauseating, but part of the "process" (and I assume the counseling that goes along with the change) is living as the "opposite" sex before the actual surgery (which I understand is irreversible).

Yes, it's sick. But this guy believes he's a woman and he's going through the changes to make himself one. Unless there's a situation where "he/she" would be living in a dorm, I think the school was wrong.

The concept of private property takes yet another hit.

Hmmm. Have you considered which restroom this individual would be using? If he's changing his gender to female he'd be using the women's restroom...there's no way I would feel comfortable in the same restroom as this person.

There's also no way to know you don't do it every day...

True...but in *knowing* a transgender person (although not surgically changed) is using the same restroom...that would make me very uncomfortable.

I would be uncomfortable in that situation also (I pointed out as much in my first post).

But I still don't think that's reason to deny someone admission to a non-residential school.
