Four lions killed near Arkansas town; more may be loose

QUITMAN, Ark. -- Lisa Vaughan says her log cabin in the woods was so peaceful that sometimes the only sound that could be heard was the trees swaying in the wind.

Now she's listening for lions.

In the past week, four 600- to 800-pound African lions believed to have some connection to a nearby exotic animal farm have been killed near this central Arkansas town. And residents say the terror may not be over, because no one knows for sure whether more lions are on the loose.

Hmm, I always wanted to go on safari. I just never expected to have to go to Arkansas to do it.

It sounds like the local with the '06 has the right idea. I'd just want to place my shot real well shooting a 600 lb. dangerous cat if I was shooting it with an '06. Unless my wife was backing me up with a .50 that is....

They do need a game farm licence. This guy's also got records for tax purposes. The sheriff is satisfied they weren't his lions. Most states have state vet requirements also.

There was an escaped monkey that took up residence in my hay barn once. He had traveled about 30 miles from a private zoo where someone had forgotten to latch a gate. He was there about a month before the zoo people captured him in a live trap. My neighbors still laugh about me finding a monkey in my barn.

Good thing rural Arkansas has gun owners, had this been Massachusetts or New Jersey the lions would probably still be chewing on somebody's carcass.

The .30'06 is a wonderful cartridge, but I wouldn't think that anything less than .375 Holland & Holland would be reliable lion medicine.

I don't want 'em coughing with annoyance as they charge me, I want 'em to drop in their tracks.

In Texas, they would be classified as exotic game animals. Any that escape from that property is fair game as long as you have a hunting license and permission from the land owner from which you will be hunting on.

You might want to try a cottontail distress call. A taped recording is preferred since you do not want the target to home in directly to you. Set your tape player about 40 yards down-wind from your position. It is preferred if the wind is cross to your position.

Does anybody know if lions can climb trees?
Or is their shinnying ability directly proportional to the elapsed time since their last gorging?
