gramsci bump. he inspired thousands of new (age) leftists and we get to reap the whirlwind. gramsci's poison infects the so called academy which more and more looks like a welfare program for otherwise unemployable commie "profs" and assistant "profs". at least in the liberal arts sector.

Joe, excellent post. This helps explain a lot of what we see coming from the left in America today.

The Gramscian Doctrine of the '30s begins to appear in American writings of the '50s like Mailer's "White Negro." It then morphs its way into the Yippie Manifesto of the '60s. Today, with the Left completely dominating the Democrat Party, The Gramscian Doctrine is proudly touted as the Party Platform of the DNC!

I'm sure you don't mean to sound full of yourself. No more so than, oh, say, Samuel P. Huntington, Daniel Pipes and Victor Hanson - all of whom have said essentially the same thing. Try getting off that high horse you're riding and pay attention to what's going on around you.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
IMHO, Gramsci did not invent a master plan to defeat Western Civilization, but merely identified those elements which would emerge in the natural course of an advancing culture. Had Gramsci not done so, someone else would have predicted these occurances, and they would have occured regardless.
The key to maintaining a society beyond the natural curve which destroyed Rome, Ancient Greece, and others, is to identify those elememts which break down a people, and remove them.
The urge to "make the world a better place" must be resisted at all costs.

Agreed - without actually having read any of Gransci's works, one is reduced to second-hand name-calling. I'm not entirely sure that the Left has dropped the ball - they're well entrenched in the most sensitive and vulnerable institutions there are - our universities, high schools and elementary schools.
The only problem with using Gramsci's techniques is that, at their core, they are predicated upon lies and deceit. And the object of Gramsci's praxis was the acquisition, retention and exercise of absolute power. As fallible human beings, we're all prone to the siren call of power.

Surely it's not mendacious and deceitful to try to retake these institutions and return them to honest study.

Surely it's not mendacious and deceitful to try to retake these institutions and return them to honest study. Not at all. But as Hanson reminds us, even though we might resemble the monster we're trying to defeat as we engage it, we must take care not to become the monster itself. That's the caveat. Power, or the prospect of achieving it is addictive in ways that we can hardly comprehend. It's a lure that few can resist. For proof, examine the conduct of our alleged 'representatives'.

Gramsci ping.
To: Jimer
Thanks for the info, it is useful.
However, I really meant it as a joke, as to me, Gramsci appears to look a bit like the 'shoe bomber'.
I guess I better stick to my day job.

They aren't as sheepish as you think. There are a lot of independent minded young thinkers out there who are decidedly conservative in their viewpoint and very much enamoured of the now ~reviled~ dead white guy Founders.
Apparently, you cannot starve quick minds by feeding them pap all their lives and expect that to satisfy them. That is the wild card.
