FAYETTEVILLE -- Former President William Jefferson Clinton will visit the University of Arkansas campus Oct. 21 to dedicate a sculpture of J. William Fulbright in the garden of Old Main, university officials announced Friday.

Fulbright, a Fayetteville native, served briefly as president of the university and for many years as a U.S. senator before his death in 1995. He established several international partnerships and study abroad programs during his work, both as a senator and a university president.

The sculpture was commissioned by UA officials from Gretta Bader, an artist based in West Virginia. The sculpture will be installed in the garden of Old Main, facing the Fulbright Peace Fountain, sometime next week. Its commission was part of the same effort that created the Fulbright Peace Fountain, designed by E. Fay Jones and dedicated in 1998.

Clinton, in his first visit to Fayetteville since leaving office, will be the main speaker at the dedication. The event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. between Old Main and Vol Walker Hall. The public is invited to attend. About 300 chairs will be set for reserved seating, with ample standing room around them. The dedication will be part of a celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of the German-American Fulbright Educational Exchange Program.

During the same trip to Arkansas, Clinton will also be inducted as an honorary member of the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame, a ceremony scheduled for Oct. 19 in Little Rock at the state house convention center, according to Skip Rutherford, president of the Clinton Foundation.

For the sculpture dedication, UA officials have also invited German President Johannes Rau to speak, but his participation has not been confirmed. Other speakers for the dedication include UA Chancellor John White, poet Miller Williams, Fulbright College Dean Donald Bobbitt, and Harriet Fulbright, widow of the late senator. John McCloy and Bettina Adenauer, both descendants of the signers who established the Fulbright program in Germany, will also speak.

A reception will follow the dedication at 2:45 p.m. in the ballroom of the Arkansas Union. The reception is open to the public.

The day's activities will begin with a symposium on German and American business relationships at 9 a.m. in the auditorium of the Continuing Education Center on Center Street of downtown Fayetteville.

Panelists include:

• Jack Jones, executive director of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at John Hopkins University.

• Rüdiger Löwe, journalist with the ARD Network in Germany.

• Wolfgang Ischinger, ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United States.

• Bettina Adenauer, attorney, businesswoman, and granddaughter of Konrad Adenauer, former Chancellor of the West German Republic.

• Helga Haftendorn, German Fulbright scholar at the University of Arkansas in 1955-56, professor emeritus of international relations at the Free University of Berlin, director of the Center on Transatlantic Foreign and Security Policy Studies.

• John McCloy, American businessman.

• Gen. Wesley Clark, former supreme allied commander of Europe and a military analyst for CNN.

• William Bader, former assistant secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs.

• Hoyt Purvis, director of the International Relations Program and journalism professor at the UA and former chair of Fulbright Scholarship Board.

• Steven Mueller, former president of Johns Hopkins University.

• Werner Meissner, former president of the University of Frankfurt.

• Current and former Fulbright scholars.

Any wagers on how long it will take somebody to post the
'Clinton Monument'?

Clinton must sense something pornographic in the memorial to have anything at all to do with its dedication.

"Didn't Halfbright cut his political teeth promoting segragation?"

Yep, but don't expect Jesse or Al to show up protesting.

Halfbright was a dem, ya know, so he gets a pass.

"Xlinton to DEDICATE Fulbright Statue"

I wonder why a picture of a male dog DEDICATING a fire hydrant just popped into my head?

That is a Monday. Unlike The Stain, I am a working man. Still, I think a midnight visit to the campus to post a few "Meagan's Law" posters is in order. You know, the ones with the Warning, "This sexual predator may be in your area" and x42s picture on it, wagging his finger. Its for the children!

Great idea! Can we do that? Is it legal? Have you noticed how he always tries to pull these things off at odd times and under the radar? You think he's dodging us? I DON'T work that day! I'm sure there are other FReepers who have some scheduling flexibility too. Maybe you could help with the signs?

I hope its legal- I've already done it on two previous visits of Bent Willie to the the state.

When you say 'help with signs', do you mean post 50 of the Sexual Predator warnings the night before or something else?

Oh maybe post some of the signs, or help make some we can carry if some of us can get together to FReep this jackass. I have wanted to do a Clinton FReep for a long time. Why should the DC chapter have all the fun?

I'm ready to Freep!!!

Fulbright was a Rhodes scholar (B.A., 1928; M.A., 1931). In Senate, he was pro-internationalist, pro-communist, anti-Constitution. Very fitting for klinton to be there.

You are exactly right! Fulbright did not vote for the Civil Rights Act. He was opposed to desegration as most southern Democrats were.

God Bless,
