Intelligence intercepts in the gulf region tell of a meeting Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had with local military commanders in August, in which he discussed the possibility of an impending war, Newsweek reports.
"This campaign will be one of life or death for this regime, and we must use everything we have," he allegedly told them.
According to the same source, Saddam told local commanders that if communications were cut with Baghdad, they had authority to fire chemical weapons the moment a ground attack began, reports Correspondent-at-Large Rod Nordland in the October 14 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, October 7).
"Everyone knows that when it starts, [Saddam] is finished," says a Kuwaiti. "No one expects restraint."
In the region preparations for war are intensifying. According to an Arab intelligence officer in the region, U.S. Special Forces teams are already inside Iraq, hunting Scud missiles and probing defenses. And the U.S. Army has deployed in the Mafraq governate in Jordan, ready to open a western front, according to critics in Amman.
While the Jordanian deployment has been discreet, it is apparently defensive in nature. Jordanian businessmen say the American army has invited tenders for a hospital and airstrip.
Newsweek also reports that a division's worth of Abrams main battle tanks have disappeared from Europe and may have been spotted atop transport trucks in Kuwait last week. But the Americans insist that any tanks brought in recently were for routine exercises and would soon go back home. And they insist that recent military activity is just routine training. But a Western official offers a different interpretation: "The Americans have to convince [Iraqi leader] Saddam Hussein they're serious."
Meanwhile, Arab intelligence officials in two countries, who spoke on condition they not be identified further, both expected the Americans to attack Iraq as early as mid-November. And some Arab officials privately say they would like Washington to move soon. "It must be quick, it must be strong and it must be decisive," as one Arab minister put it.

Now how could this be? He doesn't have any WMD remember.
Don't worry, they will be home shortly, AFTER they have crushed Saddam's evil and tyrannical dictatorship -- no later than Summer 03.
[Meanwhile, Arab intelligence officials in two countries, who spoke on condition they not be identified further, both expected the Americans to attack Iraq as early as mid-November.]
My guess: A Thanksgiving surprise for that turkey Saddam.

tell us where Saddam is and Fugedaboudit!
Because as usual they dont have the moral leadership, manpower, money (despite the Billions of petrodollars they earned) or the will to deal with this p.o.s. dictator themselves.
America has gotta roll up its sleeves and kick some Saddam @sshole to save the world from him again (sigh)
Meanwhile back on the home front in Washington DC the DemonRatz and their ilk keep conspiring to see how they can construe whatever statement, comment, gesture or inuendo to gain points against this Righteous Warrior in November or sooner.
With their latest plot of shutting down the waterfront on the west coast and preventing imports from entering the country and costing over $1 Billion per day, they quietly chuckle & snicker and they see their plan to poison the economy slowly take effect....
Kofi and D'asshole would be shocked and disappointed.

Does this mean when the cruise missiles stop flying the streets of Baghdad, and the B-52s finally allow some sunlight to hit the ground? By then, all his chemicals, all his soldiers, and all his oil are belong to us. Assimilation will merely take a few weeks at the most.
Amen, Let's Roll.
GWB's speech tomorrow:
"I have authorized US forces to begin the liberation of Iraq and..."
I do believe that a cock bird, the one being choked that is. The other one struts like a rooster, but you'd not get any turkey fries from that turkey.
