Tens of thousands of Americans protest Washington's Iraq policy

NEW YORK, Oct 7 (AFP) - Tens of thousands of people, led by some top Hollywood stars, demonstrated on the streets of the United States' largest cities to protest President George W. Bush's US plans to invade Iraq. In New York on Sunday, at least 15,000 people gathered in Central Park to denounce Washington's stance towards Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, including Oscar-winning movie star Susan Sarandon and her actor husband Tim Robbins.

Sarandon, star of hit films such as "Thelma and Louise" slammed the Bush administration's alleged bellicose policy as "madness ... a war that would kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people."

The actress and her husbad, who starred in Robert Altman's hit indictment of Hollywood's cut-throat business style "The Player," called on Americans to contact their members of Congress to oppose plans to attack Baghdad.

Robbins claimed that the government of Bush, who comes from Texas, was more interested in oil profits than global diplomacy and was ready to attack other nations. "Colombia will be next. This is an an oil hungry administration," he said.

Also among the huge crowd of protesters in New York were relatives of some of the 2,800 victims of the airborne terror attacks on New York's World Trade Center on September 11 last year.

"I don't want my country to bomb Iraqi children, women, men, innocent people, in my name ... not in my name," insisted Janet Williams, whose brother Bill died in the September 11 strikes.

The protest was one of a string of demonstrations organized by a group dubbed "Not In Our Name," a coalition of anti-war activists opposed to the US bombing of Aghanistan and US plans to launch military action against Iraq.

Two arrests were for disorderly conduct during the lively but otherwise peaceful protest, police in New York said.

Protesters in such cities as New York, San Franciso and Los Angeles chanted slogans and held up placards bearing slogans such as "Change the US administration, not Iraq's."

In downtown San Francisco, some 5,000 people protested in the city's Union Square area, according to the local police department.

"This was a fairly significant demonstration, but it was entirely peaceful and no arrests were made," Paul Yep, a spokesman with the San Francisco Police Department told AFP.

In Los Angeles, about 3,000 people took part in protests held near the campus of the University of California at Los Angeles, forcing police to close down a battery of streets in the area and even a freeway, albeit briefly. Police said that demonstration was the largest so far against Washington's Iraq policy, but reported no violence or arrests.

"This is all about stopping this war," protester Joey Johnson said. "It's unjust, immoral, it's unprecedented, it's not legitimate, it's a global onslaught." In addition to opposing a war on Iraq, protesters also want Washington to stop detentions and roundups of immigrants and halt "police state" restrictions on civil liberties.

More protests took place in other US cities and some were planned for Monday in such places as Chicago, Seattle, Washington, Portland in the state of Oregon, Houston, Atlanta in the southern state of Georgia and Denver in Colorado.

On Friday, several hundred celebrities and intellectuals published a "Not in our Name" manifesto in the Los Angeles Times, urging Americans to resist their government's policies.

We "call on the people of the US to resist the policies and overall political direction that have emerged since September 11, 2001, and which pose grave dangers to the people of the world," they wrote.

Among the signatories were "JFK" movie director Oliver Stone, "Gosford Park" filmmakers Robert Altman and Terry Gilliam, actress Jane Fonda, "Lethal Weapon" star Danny Glover and Susan Sarandon, star of "Thelma and Louise."

It was nowhere near this amount of people. I was in the Park all day with my son and I did not see one of the Osama Bin Laden Fan Club members.

Of course not. "Tens of thousands" in liberal speak actually means "We hired 50 people and 40 more showed up."

Here in Tennesse, during the big income tax protests, the pro-tax group had to hire people to show up and "support" their cause. At day they had 27 people ALL AT THE SAME TIME! (Can you believe it?) The pro-tax news channels got to where they wouldn't show them anymore because it was the same people every time.

I'm shocked that the leftist propaganda fishwrap, AFP would lie about the number of terrorist supporters showing up at a protest. /sarcasm

I see the appeaser-peacenik crowd has been busy.

America is truly a great place to live.

In America you can protest the government.

In Iraq, you protest Saddam, you'll be killed.

Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins are bleeding heart liberals. I suggest they go live in Iraq.

Why is it that this "fact" doesn't ring true?

What person in their right mind would let a brother go this way -- in those falling 9/11 buildings?

Looking closely at the photo, there are probably no more than 200 people crammed into the photo shot. The sides and backgound are almost empty. All of which means that the press account is bogus or third hand.

"Tens of thousands of Americans protest Washington's Iraq policy"

Millions and millions of Americans support Washington's Iraq policy -- as shown by every measure of public opinion.

Check and mate.

"It was nowhere near this amount of people. I was in the Park all day with my son and I did not see one of the Osama Bin Laden Fan Club members."

Same old one-trick pony.

Those of us with long memories remember well the liberal media's PR assault on our 1960s war to roll back the red tide in Southeast Asia. Cronkite, Rather & Co. were all conspicuously routing for the commies. Their successors, along with all their useful idiots, now lead the cheering section for the islamofascist terrorists. The liberal media is nothing but a local affiliate for Al Jazeera.

Also, this is a really funny DUmmyland rant about POed greenies bashing RATS:

I was at the Not In Our Name Rally today in Central Park. I expected to
attend a gathering where people of all different parties could come together
to show our support for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Iraq. I came
with a friend of mine who is a member of The New York State Democratic
Committee. He had just been successful in his efforts to get the State
Party to go on record in opposition to Bush's war. I was wearing a Carl
McCall for Governor pin and you would think I was wearing a swastika from
the responses I got ! There were signs everywhere saying if you vote
Democratic, you are supporting the War (funny, since I just recieved a
letter from my Dem. Representative expressing her opposition to Bush's
policies).
I am as disgusted with Gephardts position as anyone, but the truth
is, The Democratic Party is deeply divided on this issue, and Green attempts
to portray Democrats as monolithicly pro-war are simply dishonest ! When
I was asked why I did not support Stanley Aronowitz (the Green Party
candidate for Governor), I replied that McCall opposes the Death Penalty,
the Rockefeller Drug Laws and supports a host of other progressive causes similar to
the Green Party Platform. I was then heckled and called a liar (McCall's
positions are a matter of public record). The woman i was trying to discuss
this with refused to accept that McCall was anti- Death Peanlty and then
went on to chant "Vote Your Hopes, Not Your fears !"

That is exactly what I am doing, my hope is the War can be averted and I
don't see how re-electing Pataki or opposing my anti-war congresswoman is
going to do any good.

I'm all for criticizing any member of congress who supports Bush's rush
to war, but the blanket of lies being spread by shrill ideolougues with no
appreciation for the internal struggles going on within the Democratic Party
serves noone.

My friend who spent weeks getting the State Democratic Party to oppose
the war was quite gracious given the utter lack of appreciation for the
work of anti-war Democrats.

I don't care who gets the credit for helping to slow the war machine,
but it's pretty clear (Given Al Gore's recent comments) that we wouldn't be
in this dangerous situation had Bush not become President. Gore, for all his faults, is an internationalist and would not be pursuing Bush's deadly policies. That matters little to the tiny minority on the Left who celebrated Bush's victory. The hollow
slogans and chants of those who condemn every position to the right of
Trotsky are not going to save anybody and thier misrepresentation of the
views of those who are working hard within the Democratic Party to stop this
war do nothing but alienate potential allies.

Unilateral action in Iraq could be a global catastrophe. This is no time to distort and ignore the work of good people who are trying to avert this disaster because (like Dennis Kucinich, Barbara Lee, Ted Kennedy, Jim McDermott) they are Democrats.

What's that about someone having a sign that said "Change the US administration, not Iraq's". That says it all. Those people are really sick human scum. And they are clearly anti-American and stupid.
