UNC to host Islam Awareness Week

New motion filed in fight about Quran reading

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.(AP) - Attorneys for the organization that sued the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill over a summer reading program that included a book about the Quran have filed a new motion.

The American Family Association's Center for Law and Policy said in an amended federal court complaint that UNC is attempting to push Islam upon its students. The university is hosting a number of events related to the religion this fall, the complaint said.

The group, which counts three unnamed UNC students among its five plaintiffs, earlier this year tried to block the university from administering its summer reading program.

The program also included the requirement that students write an essay and come to campus prepared to discuss the book in small groups. University officials said the program wasn't required.

A federal court denied the group's attempt to block the summer reading program, which went off as scheduled Aug. 19.

Attorneys now hope to stop UNC from administering a series of other campus events related to the Muslim faith. They include campus seminars, round-table discussions and an Islamic awareness week, scheduled for the week of Nov. 11-15.

"We were under the impression that the summer reading program was limited to the reading of a single book, and then the writing of the essay and the discussion group," said Michael DePrimo, an attorney for the plaintiffs. "There's a lot more going on than we thought there was when we first filed our complaint."

Although the complaint has been amended, much of the basis for the plaintiffs' accusations are the same. Attorneys plan to argue that by requiring the reading program and allowing so many campus activities focusing on Islam, the university is in essence trying to show the religion in a good light.

"The issue is whether or not the university is advancing the religion of Islam," DePrimo said. "And clearly they are."

The amended complaint was filed Oct. 4, and UNC has 20 days to respond. The issue will be decided in a federal district court in Greensboro.

"We will respond appropriately and in a timely fashion," said UNC's General Counsel Susan Ehringhaus, who declined further comment.

The lawsuit was organized by the Family Policy Network, a Virginia-based Christian values group

Along with the three unnamed UNC freshmen, the plaintiffs in the case are Terry Moffitt, chairman of the board of the Family Policy Network, and James Yacovelli, the group's state director for North Carolina. Yacovelli and Moffitt sued in their capacities as residents and taxpayers in North Carolina.

It is no longer UNC, it now is UlQ, University of Left Quranolina. America's first tax-payer funded, Muslim Seminary.

As an UNC alum, I will remember this as UNC Fundraiser starts this weekend. I will be more than happy to tell them where they can go for money.

Suggested reading:

"Islam Unveiled"
by Robert Spencer

Heard the author interviewed on The Michael Medved Show...book is well referenced and
NOT politically-correct (=truthful) about The Religion of Peace, Inc.

I know there are plenty of people who practice their Muslim faith in a moderate
(=peaceful) fashion...problem is, there are just too many who don't.

I also suggest you keep up with the PBS FrontLine specials. Their two-hour special
"Muslims" was amazingly blunt about what the real dangers of Islam...even if there
are moderates in places like Turkey.

Where is Israel having suicide bombers run into Gaza/West Bank restaurants, hotels, discos, busses, etc? ... oh there is about 1 in 100 yes out of revenge ... where are Jews hijacking commercial airliners, ramming them into buildings, slitting throats of passengers and flight attendants and pilots? ... oh yeah, I forgot, 9/11 was a Mossad plot? ... we've heard that one before ...

I've yet to hear muslims outraged over 9/11 ... instead they start up the "it's Israel's fault you know" ... which is exactly where you went with your first reply ... BTW, I'm not Jewish ... so I don't have any "Jewish" agenda ...

Best possible way to respond - refuse to fund their insanity.

and Saudi Arabia has telethons to raise money for them ... in fact rewarding families of such dastardly deeds ... Saddam Hussein issues a $25,000 check for them and then complains he doesn't have enough money to feed Iraqi children? ... it is Saddam Hussein who could feed 25,000 children every day with the money from one check ... $1 probably buys a fair meal in Iraq ... but no, he supports suicide bombers ...

Yeah. It's almost as if they are doing it to be intentionally in our face.

I have no doubt they are doing it to be intentionally in our face.

1) My diagnosis: Advanced Cranio-rectal insertionitis.

Maybe we can go into business, and sell glass belly buttons. It looks like there is a market for them, and they all need to see, right?

So you dare compare the violent verses of the Torah with the violent verses of the Koran, as though each were being equally wielded in a murderous and internationally disruptive manner by fanatical zealots among Christians and Jews, just like the militant Muslim extremists. That just won't fly. Israel is the nearest thing to a Torah ruled state that excists today, yet it is a Democracy, basically ruled by it's citizens and Religion does not rule the Political structure. If it did, the Palestineans would be paying an eye for an eye for every assault upon Israelis-instead the Israeli's merely respond forcefully when attacked in an effort to put down insurrection and preserve their right to exist as a nation. THe USA is about as close to a Christanity ruled state as exists today, yet the right of all religions to practice their belief's are as protected as Christian rights-lately seemingly even more so. Our government is not ran by the Bible or scholars thereof, but by politicians and rule of law. No eye for an eye here either, just the determination to search out and destroy any who plot our destruction.

The followers of the Koran and the numerous governments ran completely by practicing Muslims and governed by the rules of Islam, are 90% tyrannical dictatorships, and those of other religions are abused, killed and forced to cowtow to that Cult to even survive. The governments mutilate, behead, stone to death and imprision many, for violating the barbarian dictates of this primative religion.

The so called renegade terrorists who claim to be Muslims, don't operate in a vacuume, totally unknown to the the religious leaders and governments under which they reside. They are known by the legitimate leaders of the government and clergy and are applauded and sponsored and funded by their ilk in high and wealthy places.

If the obvious continues to be so painful to the chickens among us, that we are driven to ignore the obvious
-the obvious will obviously take advantage of the situation and do the obvious-destroy us and everything we stand for!

Par for the course with the left. "If they hate us, they must have a point."

I wonder if they are reading un-sanitized version of the Koran or the "for Western Consumption" version?
