Russians storm theater Captors were 'liquidated,' officials say By John Daniszewski and David Holley By John Daniszewski and David Holley Los Angeles Times

MOSCOW -- Police commandos armed with sleeping gas and blazing guns stormed a theater here early today and overcame Chechen separatists holding about 700 hostages. Authorities said they were forced to launch the rescue after rebels began to kill captives. The leader of the hostage-takers and around 30 of his companions were "liquidated," officials said. There was still no official word about the toll among the hostages. An Australian diplomat was told that the number was no more than 10, and that none of the estimated 75 foreigners were among the dead. But a police officers said he saw "a lot of corpses."

It's actually better than I expected. It could easily have ended with ten times as many hostages dead.

It's nothing short of miraculous. Thank God. I can't figure out how a gas could be delivered so quickly, especially without killing a lot of people.

Now that the word is out though, terrorists will be carrying gas masks the next time around.

This could have had a much worse ending. The raid appears successful with minimum losses.

To those "good" Russian folks and the children who were held capitve, we pray that your terrible memories will slip quietly to the back of your minds and wish you all good things.

I pity (not) the Chechens that have been captured. They're going to wish they were in hell with their fallen fellow murderers.

You said it. I've heard stories about how the Russians deal with Chechens and it usually involves torture and removal of bodily parts. "Not that there's anything wrong with that!"

I wonder if the "hostage-takers" (TERRORISTS!) thought a former member of the KGB would just stand by and let them kill all of the hostages? "Liquidated" sounds like something Putin learned in the old days.

I think most of us are hip to this. It's the Hollywood lefties who still think that when the Marxist/Muslim coalition takes over the world, they'll rule hand in hand. They don't realize that the Muslims would machine-gun Susan Sarandon as soon as they had no further use for her.

And that's my only comfort. (-:

I. can't. hear. you!

Ok seriously, these survivors must have one hella hangover. Nothing like a little unplanned gassing. That's serious stuff as evidence by how many (presumably older) folks perished at the hospital from the effects.

It was taken in Israel. Those are demon-possessed Muslims rejoicing in the blood of the IDF soldiers they just murdered.

I recall reading on a thread a long time ago that the Russians have some kind of material that will melt the gas masks of opponents and they used it in, I think, Afghanistan.

end of hostage crisis in Moscow

Followup on previous report.

Interior Ministry representative states that the terrorists were in contact with certain
individuals in Chechnya, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and other unnamed countries, AS WELL
AS WITH CERTAIN DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS IN MOSCOW. This last will be investigated
by Russian security officers in conjunction with those from the respective countries and RF
Ministry of Foreign Affairs representatives.

Apart from the loss of life among the hostages and terrorists, some Alpha officers have
also been injured, but the exact nature of the injuries or loss of life among them is
undisclosed.

Most of the hostages who emerged from the building were in a state of shock and stupor
and could walk only with difficulty, some, especially the ladies, had to be carried. One
rescuer told a TV crew, with tears in his eyes, that a young woman whom he was carrying
came to in his arms and started kissing him. Natural reaction, I'd say.

Official report: no foreign nationals or children, in that order, have lost their lives in the
crisis. There were 67 foreigners among the audience.

Vice Mayor Shantsev, who had obviously been celebrating the success of the rescue
operation, said that he was proud to have shaken the hand of the Alpha colonel who had
shot dead the gang's leader Movsar Barayev (Suleymenov).

A sketch of Movsar Suleymenov's character. He is known to have been a real otmorozok,
R. slang for "frozen brain." Nephew of Arbi Barayev, the terrorist personally responsible for
countless murders, hostage takings and the beading of three Brits and one New
Zealander. The nephew eagerly followed in the footsteps of his role model and, after Arbi
Barayev was killed by federal troops, took his name. During the hostage taking he was
said by most of the people who were allowed into the building -- the deputies, doctors, etc.
-- to have been "resting," apparently in a manner that the Prophet would not have approved,
as the huge bottle of cognac he clutched in his left hand even in death shows.

Good point

Waco didn't disturb the Democrats.

Nor enough Republicans
