Croatia to prosecute glorification of fascist symbols
Drudge Report ^ | Oct 31 2002 | Matt Drudge

Posted on 11/01/2002 9:56:50 AM PST by Korth

The government of Croatian Premier Ivica Racan proposed a law on Thursday making the public display of fascist symbols punishable by up to three years in prison.

Under the new law, to be put before parliament, persons publicly displaying fascist symbols can face between three months and three years in jail.

The law primarily targets the country's right-wing extremists who use symbols of the Ustashe, forces of the Nazi puppet state that ruled Croatia during World War II.

The new law would thus forbid the use of the letter U in instances where police estimate that it stands for the ``Ustashe'', who wore the letter on their uniforms and were responsible for war crimes against Croatian Serbs, Jews, gypsies and anti-fascists.

The law would also ban the ``glorification of the symbols (such as the Nazi swastika) of former fascist states or organisations''. The present law only forbids the spreading of ethnic hatred, but does not specifically ban the use of symbols.

Also, under the proposed law, Croatia will introduce life imprisonment for war crimes, international terrorism and plane hijackers. The present laws stipulate maximum 20-year sentences for such crimes.

Sesame Street could be in deep doodoo.  We seem to have
overthrown one kind of fascism just to set up another.
Why am I not surprised?

I wonder why Tropoljac is so silent on this one? Maybe he will have to take the swastika off of his bumper?

They can start by banning that checkered flag that flew over the Ustachi capital!

That it or the swastika predates the use by the Fascists is irrelevant, it is a Fascist symbol now.

It has always been the symbol of Croatia.

But Croatia only existed as an independent state under the Ustashe. That makes the then and current flag the Ustashe flag.

Hey, I applaud the Croats for being so honest about using the same symbol! Their actions toward the monument at Jasenovac proves they are just the Ustashe reborn!

You mean the one that's still standing and where there is a commemoration every year?

Oh, you mean the one that Tudjman bulldozed in 1991? Yeah, that one.

Only the people who believe Croat lies are the easy ones. And even your Ustashe can't get us all!

"Pres. Tudjman in 1991 ordered all the buildings and remaining structures at the World War II concentration camp of Jasenovac to be razed -- with many of the artifacts and records inside -- to make way for a "rare bird sanctuary". You can find the truth here.

What a stupid comment from yourself. Do you think I'm a Nazi? As for my absence, I Just got into Europe where I spend half my time. I'm in Nagykanisza in Hungary right now. I'm here for a week. Next week (hopefully), I'll be in Belgrade visiting some friends.

Gonna visit some relatives in Germany? We could have a couple of drinks together in that case! :)
