Hitlist for Namibia's 4000 food-producers
White farmers in Namibia are preparing for economic and political chaos Zimbabwe-style after a decision by President Nujoma to create a list of farms for seizure. (31-10-02)

The hitlist is to be published in the new year and will include many of the 350 German and South African owned farms that the Government say they need in order to satisfy the increasing demands for land reform. In conjunction to the list emergency legislation is being rushed through the National Assembly to make it illegal for foreigners to own land.

Under the terms of the Agricultural Land Reform Amendment Bill, anyone selling land to an alien could be jailed for five years.

The farmers association for blacks, the Namibian National Farmers’ Union, (apartheid rules?!) organisation, has accused white farmers of attempting to sabotage all reform by charging excessively high prices for land and has claimed that the people are “growing impatient”.

Hardline members of the ruling Swapo Party have called on Mr Nujoma to follow the example set by President Mugabe in Zimbabwe.

Swapo officials still publicly insist that they have no intention of seizing foreign-owned land without compensation. But white farmers doubt the Government has the cash to pay for seizures and fears that popular passions, once aroused, could rapidly result in the land reform programme spiralling out of control.

"White mine ownership a myth... mines instead owned by millions of black people" - chairman of Gold Fields
by Sherilee Bridge - November 01 2002 at 04:06AM - Johannesburg - The chairman and outgoing chief executive of Gold Fields, Chris Thompson, has criticised government thinking that the country's mining industry was in any way still in the hands of "mythical white owners".

"savings and pensions of millions of people in the street"--
Thompson said in Gold Fields' 2002 Annual Report that "South Africa's mines are not, in fact, owned by the mythical white owners" but for the most part were now owned by foreign investors and local institutions, representing the "savings and pensions of millions of people in the street", a large portion of whom were black.

Taking a stand on the government's approach to empowerment
in the industry, Thompson said that even if the transfer of ownership to black economic empowerment groups, as laid out in the country's new legislation and accompanying charters, was achievable it would do nothing for job creation or poverty alleviation.

An adjunct to the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act, which is expected to be enforced in the new year, the charter for empowerment in the mining industry targets 26 percent black ownership within 10 years.

"There is no dominant white owner at all," Thompson said. "And therein lies the solution to true widespread black empowerment."

The wider use of pension plans, through legislation if necessary, encouraging mutual funds and the facilitation of equity ownership for all employees would rapidly expand beneficial black ownership, he suggested.

"These are the areas that hold promise of achieving transfer without destroying the industry and, at the same time, increasing the investable pool, so crucial for allowing development and growth," Thompson said.

He added that if South Africa were to be a success and if Gold Fields was to survive in the long term, then the mining industry had to proactively cater to the ambitions of the previously disadvantaged.

Forced removal protests at Kwa-Masi Hostel in Sebokeng: four people shot, rushed to hospital --
 • accusations by Anti-Privatisation Forum that Wozani Security guards had opened fire on peaceful gathering of about 6000 residents facing forced eviction -- APF - http://www.apf.org.za/ - posted by Bikisha Media Collective • Saturday September 14, 2002 at 10:47 AM -
Early Saturday-afternoon 14th September) members of Wozani Security (nicknamed the ‘Red Ants’ because of their red overalls worn during forced removals) allegedly opened fire with live ammunition on what is termed by the Bikisha Media Collective a "peaceful gathering of residents of the Kwa-Masiza hostel in Sebokeng."

The website claims that about 6,000 residents and members of the Anti-Privatisation Forum had gathered outside the gates of the hostel on Saturday for a mass meeting "to discuss how to move forward in their fight against their eviction from the hostel by Vicva Investment Company. "

Quote: "In a completely outrageous and illegitimate move, the ‘Red Ants’ told the residents that they were engaged in an “illegal gathering” and then, without warning, opened fire on the crowd with live ammunition.

"At the time of the shootings, there were no police in the vicinity and, according to eyewitnesses at the scene the police had still not arrived over an hour later.

"Three adult males and one adolescent male were shot and were immediately rushed to Sebokeng hospital where they are presently undergoing treatment. At this time, it is not clear as to the extent of the injuries suffered by these residents.

"The Anti-Privatisation Forum, whose members have been assisting the Kwa-Masiza residents in their struggles against the privatisation of the hostel and their subsequent eviction (some APF members were at the scene of the shootings), demands the immediate withdrawal of all the ‘Red Ants’ from the Kwa-Masiza Hostel area and the arrest of those members responsible for this reprehensible and inhumane act.

"The APF will be assisting the residents in taking statements and gathering evidence to use in a legal battle against this private security company that has become the enemy of all poor people.

SA AMBASSADOR IN THE HAGUE ACCUSED OF RACISM BY DUTCH STAFF?
"Rumours are rife of considerable strife at the South African embassy in The Hague, namely that ambassador Priscilla Jana 's staff is divided into two camps which both accuse each other of racism. The "kroegstorie" goes that a few Dutch employees at the embassy - hired during the apartheid-era -- are accusing the ambassador of racism. Fact or Barfly tales? We are checking into the rumours just for "lekkerte".

By Ingrid Oellermann - Nov 1 2002 -- A relative of an accused Pietermaritzburg drug syndicate leader, on trial with five others on drug trafficking charges -- issued death threats against the magistrate in court Thursday. The threats were heard by public attending the court, as well as police officers, a court security officer and advocates.

The accused are: Sathyanand "Sunil" Harrichand Chander, his common-law wife, Lalitha Thaver Muthuveeran, her son, Eugendren Higgins Thaver, and Mr Vasie Sivanathan, Sadic Mohammed and Larry Pillay.

SOWETO/BRONKHORSTSPRUIT BOMBINGS --
"If so-called "rightwingers" (a term which in South Africa only seems to refer to Afrikaners) are responsible -- Mbeki's comment still remains unproven and is highly speculative – then a new era has started in South Africa. It will be an era where pockets of the Afrikaner- and Boer people are becoming militant.

This alone deserves serious consideration.

Afrikaners were passive
For the past decades the white Afrikaans community was mostly passive in their objections to the NP government’s decline and eventual handover to the ANC led government.

The Afrikaner is a minority in South Africa – not even 10% of the total population.

Why do Afrikaners feel so alienated?
Masses of Afrikaners have moved overseas with their families into the so-called Afrikaner Diaspora. London has an Afrikaner population of over 300,000 mostly young people alone, and even its own Afrikaner churches.
The numbers of Afrikaners in Australia – and in particular Perth – has caused the area to be satirically referred to as one of the South African provinces.

Rhetoric of blame is now a white lie (AFRICA, HEAL THYSELF)
The Daily Telegraph ^ | September 3, 2002 | Tim Butcher
"I remember Africa in the 1960s, everyone was filled with high expectations after independence. Forty years on, Africa is a series of kleptocracies, many worse off than they were under colonial rule. Almost all of the common people in relative worse shape to the rest of the world than they were before independence. Africans after 40 years have no one to blame but their own leadership for their problems. The leaders want to deflect blame to the West. The West's not buying it anymore..."
