We have it here. It occurs naturally in nature in wild animals. We used to have plague warnings just like rabies warnings. Don't touch wild animals, especially cute, small ones.

Two weeks of antiboitics and you are fine, unless of course this is weapons grade.

and if it is, you can bet FReepers will have that figured out long before the CDC releases an official statement.

Probably some transplanted Californian Greenies in Santa Fe who love all of nature and never considered that they make rat poison and .22's for a reason.

Plague also has a long history of being used in warfare. Corpses of plague victims were sometimes catapaulted over city walls. The Japanese during World War II used plague.

In the middle ages, the only protection from plague was natural immunity. You are the descendent of folks with that natural immunity, as is everyone else. So plague is a serious disease; but it is unlikely ever to sweep thru humanity like it did before, even without antibiotics.

The map locating reports of bubonic plague in your post # 8 is noteworthy in limited and isolated report of the disease from Mexico.

The names of the 'black death' carriers are being denied to America by the media, while the information filtered to us suggest - by inference - the pair are citizens of New Mexico.

TexKat is spot on asking the question "Who is he, and where did he come from? Traveling!!!"

An incident of two illegals bring THE PLAGUE into our country, because President Bush doesn't believe in effective border control between Mexico and the people of the United States would have the effect of slaming shut those rat hole openings on the border that allow and invite Mexican "travelers".

Are these two people American or Mexican citizens???

Ring around the rosy,
A pocket full of posies,
Ashes, Ashes,
We all fall down.

Don't children have a way with games & rhymes?

Nothing to worry about huh?

NewScientist.com ^ | 10-3-2001 | Debora MacKenzie Bubonic plague genome is "unusually fluid" 19:00 03 October 01 Debora MacKenzie Bubonic plague, the bacterium blamed for the Black Death of medieval Europe and now a potential biological weapon, has had its entire genome sequenced. The genes seem to be "unusually fluid", readily re-arranging themselves and picking up new genes from other microbes. That could mean that more virulent strains of plague might emerge. More ominously, it suggests that enhanced strains might be relatively easy to develop as weapons. The bacillus that causes bubonic plague, Yersinia pestis, commonly infects rodents in Asia, Africa and the Americas. But it ...

If they killed cats it probably would have been because of the superstitious belief that they were in league with the devil.

I read a theory recently that linked rat exterminations with plague outbreaks. The idea is when they killed the rats the fleas had to find another warm body to feed off of. That is why it is important not to approach dead rodents to inspect them.
