U.S. Forces Take Fire in 3 Afghanistan Incidents
By Kathleen T. Rhem

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20, 2002 -- U.S. forces in Afghanistan
took enemy fire Nov. 19 in three different incidents. No
Americans were injured.

The first incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m.
local time. Unknown assailants fired automatic weapons
toward and above the firebase at Tarin Kowt, about 200
miles southwest of Kabul. Defense officials said a quick
reaction force was sent to investigate, but no other
details were available.

A Special Forces unit based in Jalalabad, about 60 miles
east of Kabul, was searching a compound for a suspected
weapons cache at about 7 a.m. local time when five persons
opened fire with AK-47 rifles. The attackers fled when the
soldiers returned fire, officials said.

The soldiers continued their search and took sniper fire
when they entered a building. They again returned fire and
may have wounded the sniper, though no one was found,
officials reported. The search confirmed the compound had
been used as a drug lab.

Early in the afternoon of Nov. 19, a Special Forces unit in
Asadabad, east of Kabul on the border with Pakistan,
reported enemy contact. Defense officials said A-10
Thunderbolts from Bagram responded and dropped two 500-
pound bombs and fired more than 300 30mm cannon rounds on
the target area. There was no information available on
enemy casualties.

A Defense Department spokesman said there was no indication
any of the incidents were related.

I wondered if you heard Al Gore on Larry King last night. He said we had "abandoned" Afghanistan, just like the Russians did. He also said we should have stayed "like we did in Bosnia."

CALLER: Hi. My question is, would you have bombed Afghanistan after 9/11?

A. GORE: Oh, yes. More than that, I would have done what President Bush properly did, to send our troops over there to root them out and destroy the al Qaeda network.

And as I said earlier in the program, I would have stayed long enough to impose peace in that country and give them a chance to work things out. That's what we did in Bosnia and in Kosovo to get them talking to one another again and lower their blood pressure and build a frame work for a normal nation.

And the Afghans have once again been abandoned as they were in 1989 after they defeated the Soviet Union.

~~~~~~~~~~~~snip
Look at what's happened now. Osama bin Laden is back making threats at us. Al Qaeda is back posing just as serious a threat as it did during the weeks leading up to 9/11, according to our intelligence agencies. The war lords are back in power in Afghanistan, and the Taliban is back in Afghanistan. The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff said we're losing ground there. The CIA folks are complaining that resources have been diverted away from the war against terrorism to the war against Iraq. I think that...
I won't be holding my breath!
Great pics of the children-love the smiles on the little girls-so GOOD to see this!
And the masses gathered for the funeral...scary stuff...lots of anti-American sentiment. We need to pray for truth to prevail.
And you need to put a PUKE ALERT UP when you are going to place scott ritter on this thread. He truly makes me feel ill.
Someone needs to send that arse a few zillion of pics of our troops who are risking their lives daily in Afgan....gore needs to SEE the marvels that have been accomplished there. The schools, children PLAYING, women out and about, the changes already made in agriculture, the medical help etc etc.
Al gore needs to be spanked and put in a corner with about fifty or so of Diogenesis' threads for company.
"Will the conventional media EVER give President Bush and the US military credit for liberating the Afghanis? I doubt it."
Another question: If any of this could get through to the Iraqis, what effect do you think it would have on the average Iraqi? Or, perhaps to the Iranians?
Salivating for freedom for their "Talibanannas"? you better, you better, you betchya, you bet!
Your doubt is well founded. The beauty is that W probably doesn't mind that much. I do hope that the White House lurks here on FreeRepublic and has become hooked to your Gotta See This threads and is sharing those photographs of the children with W. That would be reward enough for him, I would think. The smiles on the faces of the little ones are so genuine, so special. May they be blessed and protected....
Because of this concern, federal agencies are taking a variety of additional steps to ramp up our protection and prevention measures, as well as communicating with state and local law enforcement and the private sector to inform them of our assessment of the latest information. If you'll recall, in early October, there was a release of tapes recorded by bin Laden, as well as Zawahiri, and increased intelligence reporting against our critical infrastructure, transportation systems, and the American people and our friends and allies. That led us to issue several public warnings about the heightened possibility of either a large-scale or several small-scale attacks on the United States at home or against our interests abroad. At that time, we began a coordinated effort among all levels of the government and the private sector to reduce our vulnerability and increase our preparedness levels, based on the new threat information. Ship on fire
The Norwegian navy ship KNM Orkla caught fire off the coast of Alesund, western Norway, on Nov 19. The navy minesweeper had 33 crew on board but no injuries were reported and the crew was evacuated to safety, rescue officials said. -- AFP
That's a heck of a fire.
Your picture of Scott Ritter above caught him signing his I.Q. for the audience.
Which is actually higher than AlGore's.
The smiling girls of Afghanistan are the purest advertisment for Operation Enduring Freedom.
Just as the French mob on the Rue de Trolls invite a well-placed daisy cutter.
Oops, it's a BLU-118 thermobaric enema, dude--joke's on you.
U.S. Military: Humanitarians?
By Cinnamon Stillwell
Sunday, November 17, 2002
The liberal media uses many words to describe our military, but ''humanitarian'' isn’t one of them. Of course, the purpose of the military is to fight, but that’s not all they do. Our forces in Afghanistan have engaged in a number of humanitarian projects that have greatly benefited the Afghan people, but you won’t hear about it in the liberal media.
Indeed, it’s difficult to find any mention of our military at all, let alone something positive, unless a mistake is suspected or civilians are killed. In short, the coverage is completely negative.
Friday’s ''Forum'' (11/15) on KQED radio was a prime example of this kind of anti-military bias. Host Angie Coiro interviewed filmmakers Cliff Orloff and Olga Shalygin, about their documentary, ''Afghanistan: Winning the War, Losing the Peace,'' which is set to air on KQED television. The documentary purports to tell the story of America’s alleged failure to secure the peace in Afghanistan following its success in the war.
After listening to several callers share with the sympathetic host their disgust with our government’s military policies, I could take it no longer. I called the show and asked if they were aware of the humanitarian work that our military has been doing in that region, such as delivering medical supplies, food, and clothing, helping to build roads, and providing medical care and education. I was met with a moment of silence, followed by both speakers claiming that they were unaware of any of this work. Orloff did concede that the U.S. Army’s Civil Affairs Commission was helping to rebuild the infrastructure of the country, but I doubt he would have mentioned this significant fact without prompting from a caller.
The truth is, you can’t win when it comes to the left’s attitude towards our military policies. They continually chide our government for supporting corrupt regimes, but when we threaten to undermine those regimes, they accuse us of being imperialists. To them, American foreign policy is an evil in and of itself.
The problems in Afghanistan are myriad, but they certainly are not the fault exclusively of our military nor of our government’s policies in that region. The warlord culture and the stifling effect of Islamic law, are the main reasons for Afghanistan’s lack of progress. The process of modernization in that part of the world can only be achieved with the help of the Afghan people, but even so, it’s going to take a long time.
These photos posted on the Department of Defense web site, tell the story our liberal media doesn’t want you to know:
Finding the last little cover girl and seeing what the years did to her was heartbreaking.
Yes, it was, was't it ? She looked worn down and used up by life. It was good to know that she had survived, however, and I hope that life will go better for her now.
Same female.
For the doubters who would never believe the girl grew up to look like that, National Geographic had a lab do a retinal scan to make sure they had the same person.
I knew it was the same girl because the rest of her features look the same, especially those eyes. When I read the rest of the thread and they showed another picture of her grown up, in that one her nose did look the same. Maybe it was the lighting or angle or something that made her nose look different in the first one, it looked more like a hawk nose. It was interesting to see how she looks now, she really looks a lot older and tougher.
You're right. When I first saw the pictures some months ago, I was convinced someone had broken her nose because of that downward angle. If she was raised in an industrial country when she was first discovered, she would have made a decent living as a model.
When I think that people only have food, clothing and shelter if they're lucky, I have to remember there are also countries where a person is lucky to have food, clothing, shelter and no beatings from the spouse.
