The Buff must have been loitering...

Good to get more details on this. The first report just said a sniper shot at them. Big difference.
LOL, sure must have surprised those warlords to find out the B-52's are still around.

It must be pretty hard to tell which ones are the good guys, if any.

The ones who are shooting at us are the bad guys.
That doesn't necessarily mean that there are any good guys.

Classic. They've been sniping at our patrols and convoys on such a regular, predictable basis that we've started bringing back the B-52's for a little surprise now and again...

"LOL, sure must have surprised those warlords to find out the B-52's are still around." I expect so, 14,000 pounds of 'guided' explosives on your troops can't go un-noticed.
" The B-52 bomber dropped seven 2,000lb laser-guided bombs."

It's good that the Buff was in place ready to help.
Now it's time to send a couple more to the headquarters of the punk in charge of the bunch that attacked our soldiers.
We need to make these tinpot warlords understand that there are dire consequences if one of their fools shoots at our guys.

One raghead to another:
"First it is the little planes with rockets, then the big plane with bombs. Little plane, big plane. Oh, Allah! I wished I'd gone to Detroit and pumped gas like my brother Amehed!"

Blackhawk UP YOURS, Mo'hamn it.
XXX42's craven motivations to waste our best in ill supported police chases must be as clear any lesson learned in Nam.
This B-52 angel is so unPC I want to hug the crew, air and ground too. "Annihilation" should be in the Rules of Engagement; with seven 2,000#ers, it may be.
We all need to visit a VA hospital this Christmas season. I want to thank real men and women in person to let them know that their service and risks are remembered. I hear that calling cards are always appreciated gifts, especially for long-term patients to ring up friends and family. Yup, I'm gonna do it.

the aircraft are still loitering. F-15, F-16, B-52, F/A-18 and A-10.

"Classic. They've been sniping at our patrols and convoys on such a regular, predictable basis that we've started bringing back the B-52's for a little surprise now and again..." Yup. I think a signal was just sent. They could have used a Warthog or even the C-130 Spectre, huh?

If we only react to individual events when we are actively being fired upon, all initiative goes to the hand of the enemy. A warlord's men fired on US troops. At a minimum that warlord's home and headquarters should be obliterated.

Thanks for posting this. I saw a thread about it earlier but it wasn't clear how BUFF became involved, nor did it mention the size of the bombs or how many.

The Buff must have been loitering... You sure can't just whistle one up from Diego Garcia, or much of anywhere else. Even if they had them cocked and ready to roll, it would take, I would guess, at least 15 minutes for them to get airborne, then hours to get to the target. How many hours would depend on just where the BUFF was based. This one must have been the designated aircover for that patrol, or at least that relatively small area.
BTW, it's always nice to see the old girl get in her licks. The newest one came off the Boeing line in about 1964 IIRC. They, unlike active duty and many reserve forces KC-135s, are still using the original engines.

It must be pretty hard to tell which ones are the good guys, if any. Maybe, but it's easy to tell when they are the bad guys, they are the ones that are shooting at you.

At a minimum that warlord's home and headquarters should be obliterated. How do you know that they weren't? Who would be taling to the press about if they were? The troops in contact wouldn't have seen a thing. Would have had to use JDAMS or some other non-laser guided bombs, since there probably wouldn't be anyone around to lase the target, although an F-15E, F-16 or F-18 with the proper pod (LANTIRN,LITNING, etc)could lase the target(s) for the BUFFS, or they could just do it themselves and dispense with the BUFF.
