The mood inside Sen. Mary Landrieu's re-election campaign headquarters was glum by midafternoon Saturday. Checks of key precincts showed turnout among African-American voters wasn't nearly what the Democratic incumbent needed.

Your optimism is needed, but is it realistic? Why would you think ND would turn out one of its entrenched Democrat senators when SD will not do so? Why do you think NV would turnout the Senate Democrat whip? Why do you think GA would vote out Zell Miller? Why do you think AR would reject its woman senator seeking reelection when LA did not? Just who in AR might even be available to run in 2004? Who do see as Schumer's opponent in NY in 2004? I notice that you did not put down LA as a possible pickup in 2004. Clinton made not only phone calls but actual visits to Florida, Missouri, New Hampshire and Georgia...and lost. Somehow we didn't see them taking credit for the losses.

The very, very popular former Governor Schaefer is considering a run in North Dakota. As a former Governor, he would be an excellent candidate. I strongly believe that Thune would have won in South Dakota had Daschle not been Majority Leader. What would have been the incentive to keep Johnson in the Senate otherwise? With Daschle running for President, and I believe he will, Thune can start packing his bags for Washington.

Reid is very vulnerable, and he only won by 500 some votes in 1998. Since then, the Republican Party has made huge gains in the state. Unless Reid does something special, he is finished.

I believe Zell Miller will retire in 2004. He doesn't enjoy serving in the Senate, and he doesn't like his Party.

I believe that Governor Huckabee will take on Blanche Lincoln in 2004. As far as I know, Lincoln is an unknown in her homestate. In fact, I very rarely hear her name mentioned nationally.

As far as NY is concerned, we have an excellent chance to win there. We need to start fighting in that state.

I share your skepticism about all the GOP gains in 2004, even if the economy does finally shift into high gear. On the bright side though, I didn't think we'd pick up any seats this time. So hopefully I don't know what I'm talking about again.

Thanks for the info on 2004 prospects. I did not know about a former ND governor running against -- is it Dorgan or Conrad, in 2004? I know it is very hard for Republican to win either a House or Senate seat in ND. The governorship is not that hard for Republicans in ND, however. Reid is now Democrat whip, in the leadership, and that should make him stronger in NV. I do not think Daschle will do anything except run for reelection and win again. I can't imagine any opponent at this time for Schumer in NY. Why do you think Miller will leave the Senate after such a short stint? And the 2002 gains in GA won't happen in 2004 if Governor Perdue reneges on his promise to bring up the Confederate flag design question again. My understanding is that Perdue is backing away from the flag issue that helped to elect him.

It is unclear precisely when Hollywood liberals began to believe their own material--Streisand repetitiveness, selfsameness, and ubiquity confound the issue--but by November 5, 2002, certainly, the transfer of all this nonsense to celluloid was complete.

In San Francisco during the month preceding the Democrat debacle, party operatives were busy mixing metaphors and switching hitters as they hedged their bets: Robocalls to erstwhile and presumptive liberals made by the impeached utter failure ex-president were quickly mitigated by those of Martin Sheen, clinton's competent counterpart cleanup man... just in case...

What is surprising here is not the swapping of Sheen for clinton- both are play-act presidents, after all. It is, rather, that the Democrats believed it was necessary to hedge their bets in the most liberal city in the country. No other single act, it seems, foreshadowed more ominously the Democrat Debacle of '02.

Go, MiaT, Go. What happened in Louisiana appears to be that the Demon machine got active in that one state - while it could not do it all over the country - with just one state to focus upon - the machine ground out the votes and some Republican idiots either stayed home or voted for the Dem. Sad.

The Dems NEVER give up. They are relentless because they are driven by the lust for power that never stops.

Sadly, many Republicans - the ones who were so energized leading up to Nov 5th - simply did not have the energy to carry over to this special election. Sad again.

Lesson from Louisiana: Republicans should always have a reserve team ready for an after election push...because, we must know, from now on, there will be more after election "electons" - it's the way for the Rats to "win".

as part of a widely publicized, $396,000 redecoration of the executive

mansion and not to Clinton personally.

 

"When we've been asked to donate, it was always hyphenated with the

his family-owned business, which gave two sofas, an easy chair and an

ottoman, worth $19,900 and listed by Clinton as part of the gifts he

took with him. "To us, it was not a donation to a particular person."

Sen. Clinton made another assertion - one that is equally misleading.

She contends she was not obliged to report the first Leiber bag she received "because it was received before the Clintons entered the White House."

But this bag, valued at $3,500, was received after the election and during the transition and therefore obviously was related to the Clinton presidency.

Several terrorist organizations sprang up in Louisiana during the Reconstruction era. They primarily aimed to intimidate Republican voters and officeholders of both races, obstruct implementation of Radical Republican policies, and restore Louisiana to rule by native whites.

The main instruments of white terror in Louisiana were the Knights of the White Camellia, formed in 1868, and their successor group, the White League, which had spread across the state by 1874. The earliest of white supremacy groups was the Ku Klux Klan, formed in Tennessee in 1866, but evidence of the Klan's activity in Louisiana is scanty.

Whites, many of them Democrats, joined these terrorist organizations when they began losing power to Radical Republicans, both white and black. The immediate goal of these groups was to keep white and black Republicans away from polling places. Their violent tactics, targeted at black leaders, escalated during Reconstruction. White mobs killed three state legislators during these turbulent times.
