(12-10) 14:34 PST WASHINGTON (AP) --

Former Sen. Slade Gorton was named Tuesday to an independent commission investigating the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Gorton, R-Wash., served three terms in the Senate before losing a re-election bid in 2000. He was appointed to the post by Senate Republican leader Trent Lott of Mississippi.

The 10-member panel, headed by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, will look at a wide range of events leading up the attacks, including intelligence failures and related issues such as immigration and aviation security.

"I am confident that Senator Gorton will help us gain a further understanding of our intelligence gathering, the methods of America's enemies and the nature of the threat we face," Lott said in a statement.

Gorton is now a lawyer in the Seattle firm of Preston Gates and Ellis.

Slade can be counted on to do whatever is politically expedient.

Living in WA State one gets to know Slade, at least by reputation; and it's not pretty. He is too politically correct to support a conservative running against Patty "Dimwit" Murray. He and Mitch McConnell kept Republican Senate support funds from Smith, thereby killing her campaign.
Gorton can be expected to do the same with our nation's security.

Slade Gordon is a real idiot. I still wonder how the fool managed to blow what should have been a win against a real moron.

Smith did herself no favors by being a strident booster of that blatantly anti-1st Amendment Campaign Finance Reform. Slade had his faults, but he did grow in office from his liberal Republican roots, and I was sorry to see him go down to that dreadful Maria dot.bomb Cantwell.

You have a gazillionaire (who really wasn't a gazillionaire) run against you with a solid anti-American McDermott 'Rat base out of the Black Hole of Puget Sound and see how well you do.

My liberal Seattle friends refer to him as "Skeletor." I can't help it - it's funny...

"Gorton is now a lawyer in the Seattle firm of Preston Gates and Ellis."

That's the law firm of which the "Gates" is Bill Gates' lawyer Dad. The latest "no good" they're up to is pushing for a state income tax, again. These Libs never quit. They want an income tax so bad they can taste it. Makes it tough on us little working stiffs to have to fight a big well-funded machine that includes the Gates and Gorton mega-bucks.

Yeah, I saw that item. Better still, they want to "grandfather" the among-the-highest-in-the-nation sales tax until the income tax gets up to speed...I swear I'm not making this up, they intend to maintain the pushing-9% sales tax "until revenues from the income tax replace those from the sales tax" and then - no, hold on, this'll kill ya - then they'll "reduce the sales tax." Honest. They really will. Suuuuuure they will. I love this place...who needs Comedy Central when you can read this stuff?

Slade Gorton is a flake so he and the "Special K Flake" Kissinger will work well together. During the vote on impeachment proceedings against Clintoon, the Senate had 3 (I think) issues to vote on. Gorton voted for impeachment 2 out of 3 issues. The one issue he didn't vote for covered the lying portion. I personally called his D.C. office and did a lot of yelling on that vote. Gorton could almost qualify as a RINO.

Wasn't Linda Smith a "populist" crank in the mode of John McCain (albeit without the war record)?

Still, better her than Patty "duh" Murray.
