NEW YORK — Kelly Clarkson may not be the doe-eyed amateur she appeared to be when she won American Idol last summer.
Clarkson may have already had a recording contract -- and was in the middle of making a record for someone else -- when she showed up to audition for the show, Star magazine is reporting.

According to the friends they interviewed, this was something like the third time that she was close to her big break before things fell apart.
Usually a guy like Goffin finds a prospect, records a few songs, and then shops the demo around to likely buyers.
And I find it hard to believe that no one on American Idol had ever done a demo and shopped it around.
The definition of a professional recording artist is that they get paid to record their songs. I doubt a savvy record producer was paying an unknown kid to record for him when he was already paying the studio to record her.
