NEW YORK Kelly Clarkson may not be the doe-eyed amateur she appeared to be when she won American Idol last summer.

Clarkson may have already had a recording contract -- and was in the middle of making a record for someone else -- when she showed up to audition for the show, Star magazine is reporting.

According to her VH1 profile, Goffin had agreed to produce her, but put her recording on indefinite hold when he got sick with cancer.

According to the friends they interviewed, this was something like the third time that she was close to her big break before things fell apart.

Usually a guy like Goffin finds a prospect, records a few songs, and then shops the demo around to likely buyers.

And I find it hard to believe that no one on American Idol had ever done a demo and shopped it around.

The definition of a professional recording artist is that they get paid to record their songs. I doubt a savvy record producer was paying an unknown kid to record for him when he was already paying the studio to record her.

Kelly performs her smash hit single, "I'm not a crook."

Mista-a-akes were ma-a-ade.
This is old new-ews.
And you'd understand
If it happened to youse.

Ooh-ooh let me off the ho-ok
'Cause I'm no crook
It's a personal matter.
Time to move on.

Oh-oh-oh yes, it's time to move on...
