Fox: migration is not a problem

Por

Mexico City, Mexico, December 18, 2002 (EFE)- Mexican President Vicente Fox said Wednesday that migration is not a problem, but rather an opportunity, and he urged the international community to respect the rights of immigrants.

"We must leave behind our prejudice and mistrust; migration is not a problem, it is an opportunity.

Migrants are not a threat, but rather a element of development," the president said during a visit to Mexico's northern border to mark International Migrants Day.

"Mexico on this day calls on the international community to enact as soon as possible the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families," he added.

The UN treaty, otherwise known as the Migrant Workers Convention (MWC), affords migrant workers and their families the same protection as nationals of the countries where they work. One more country needs to sign the convention for it to take effect.

Fox also said the 21st Century belongs to emigrants, for which reason the international community should "open its eyes to an increasingly obvious reality."

In the case of Mexico, a "fair migration agreement" with the United States is imperative to protect some 20 million people of Mexican descent living north of the border and to legalize the status of another 3.5 million undocumented immigrants there.

"We should take an issue that has been the cause of long-standing frictions between our countries and turn it into a true opportunity for our nations," he said.

The United States, Fox added, needs to consider the economic, developmental and cultural contributions of Mexican migrants, who will send an estimated $10 billion home this year, making remittances "one of the largest sources of foreign exchange for our country."

Some 1.5 million Mexicans living in the United States are expected to return home to spend the Christmas holidays with their families, prompting Fox to urge customs officials to facilitate their visits.

He also urged Mexicans to expose corrupt immigration officials while noting that his government had taken measures to improve the lives of Mexicans residing in the United States, including the issue of more than one million consular IDs.

The ID cards, which are issued at Mexican consulates across the United States, allow undocumented immigrants to get access to public and private services, such as opening bank accounts, obtain driver licenses and get library privileges. EFE

You know, I can't really hold it against Fox for wanting to get the best possible deal for his country. I do hold it against our "leaders" for allowing it to happen.

Fox wants more

About 94,000 beneficiaries living abroad have been brought into the system by the 20 existing international agreements. A Mexican agreement alone could bring in 162,000 in the first five years.

I had assumed that people living abroad and receiving SS were American citizens. Do any Americans who worked abroad receive similar pensions from foriegn governments? Or are these all one-way treaties, like the rest of the recent ones?

And Fox is going to enact the exact same measures on his southern border, right?

Fox's words re "opportunity" have certainly been put to use in Mexico. Every non-Mexican illegal immigrant passing through on their way to the United States is viewed as an "opportunity" by the Mexican police, immigration authorities and other criminals. The illegals are robbed, raped, murdered and many young female Salvadorans, Hondurans, Nicaraguans and Guatemalans end up in Mexican bordellos. One of the terms I hear frequently here in Mexico regarding non-Mexican illegal immigrants is "pulido como un pollo" ("plucked like a chicken"); there's a lot of money to be made off these chickens and there's many a Mexican law enforcement official who has made a pretty good living off the trade.

Lott backs use of troops to protect U.S. borders

Do you think our "leaders" will make Trent Lott apologize to Vicente Fox as long as he's groveling?

Hard to believe Lott proposed that. No way Mr. Affirmative Action Lott would support that now.

Of course, if Lott somehow manages to survive -- and stops groveling to the left -- he might give this White House some heartburn. They didn't do much but kick him while he was down after he had carried their water these past two years.

IMHO, that's just one of many reasons his own party hung him out to dry.
He apparently isn't in tune with the border eradication plan.

Fox need to export a minimum of about 2,300,000 Mexicans per year to the U. S. to maintain Mexico's present self-strangulating condition of overpopulation.

If Fox would spend even 10% as much time improving the lives of his citizens within his own borders as he does fixing the problems of his citizens within ours, we wouldn't have this screwed up mess. At one time I thought Fox might be a good President. He's sure put that theory to rest.

Mexican President Vicente Fox has been pushing President Bush to ink a Social Security agreement with Mexico as something of a consolation prize to make up for the failure of Bush to pursue promised immigration reforms, according to Latino lobbyists close to the Fox administration.

I'd be happy if they gave him the booby prize.
Actually, if they are paying SS then they should be entitled to the benefits.

Sixty percent of Americans believe present immigration levels are a "critical threat to the vital interests of the United States," but only 14 percent of the nation's leaders think so, a new analysis finds The "leaders" of our former nation are treating with foreign government on the terms of their colonization of that former nation. The Mexicans even talk in the terms of colonialism: Wealth extracted, imperial documents granting privilege, etc. If this isn't treason, it will do until treason comes along.

Trent Lott has been MIA on Illegals for years. His O'Reilly comment about troops on the border (the worst idea on the table) was just blowing smoke, his office said that no legislation was planned.

Lott has been hung out to dry by no one but himself.
