Now this statement, on the other hand, is ludicris. In my opinion, the ability to flag other users attention to a post is what really makes FR's software stand out from other message board packages. I've thought to myself many times when posting on USENET groups that I frequent how nice it would be to have a "ping" feature there.

I find myself agreeing the most with your comments above.

Some forum software will email you when a reply is posted to a thread you have replied to, and I find that is a fairly good compromise- obviously, if you bother to post there, you have some sort of interest in the thing.

Yes, I find the lists annoying at times, but they are also very useful in calling a group to mass action or attention.
