The complete transcript reads:

Phil Donahue: “Let me tell you what is impressive [so just shut up while I run my mouth]. You’re not wearing a flag [you're urinating on it like I do]. Well, I don’t want to damn you with my praise, but I say hip-hip-hooray for that, and I think you gave the right answer ["Death to America'} when you spoke at Northwestern University....”

Tom Brokaw: “[Screw the] right. I said, you know, I wear a [large Soviet] flag in my heart, but I think if you wear a[n American] flag [in any other fashion than as underwear], it’s a suggestion somehow that you’re endorsing what the [the currently unacceptable] administration is doing at the time. [If this were the Clinton Adminstration, heck, I'd wear a red, white and blue thong - just for our little sessions together with Bill.] And I don’t think journalists ought to be wearing flags [because, at its core, it is so passe and my hairdresser says it clashes with his silver gray accents].”

Donahue: “And I say hear, hear, hear.” – Exchange on MSNBC’s Donahue, July 25.

As a child of the Smokey Bear days, when I see a fire I try to beat it out with whatever is handy. In the case of a burning flag, I would tend to use the one who lit it.

Tom Brokaw: “Right. I said, you know, I wear a flag in my heart, but I think if you wear a flag, it’s a suggestion somehow that you’re endorsing what the administration is doing at the time. And I don’t think journalists ought to be wearing flags.”

What utter garbage. The Flag represents our country, not the president or the policies of the current administration. During the Clinton/Gore nightmare years the flag was sullied as never before, but it was still our flag and nothing Clinton did or didn't do could diminish its glory. The flag is the America and her people, plain and simple. If the leftists hate America and our flag they could at least be honest about it. But being a liberal means never having to be honest.

The Donahue / Brokaw exchange highlights the inadequacies of those two minds more sharply than an on-camera lapse into baby talk would have done. Donahue can't see the difference between not wearing a flag pin because one isn't given to conspicuous display and not wearing one as a statement of opposition to some political policy. Brokaw doesn't have the faintest appreciation of the gulf between objectivity before the facts and the moral indifference he thinks proper to a journalist -- a species to which he hasn't belonged for quite some time in any case.
