A running battle about Lieberman being a "NEW KIND OF DEMOCRAT"

The San Marcos Record (Texas) 1/14/03

Sen. Lieberman says he’s a ‘different kind of Democrat’

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) Sen. Joseph Lieberman jumped into the 2004 race for president Monday, criticizing President Bush while promising to “talk straight to the American people” and show them he is “a different kind of Democrat.”

Lieberman, who could become the nations’ first Jewish president, told students at his old high school that during the Bush campaign two years ago, “we were promised a better America, but that promise has not been kept.”

He also reminded them that he and Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000 when he was Gore’s vice presidential running mate.

“I am also proud to say, in that election, as you may remember, that Al and I got a half million more votes than our opponents, and we actually got more votes than any Democratic ticket in the history of the United States,” Lieberman said.

At the White House, spokesman Ari Fleischer said: “There are many things many Democrats are going to say in order to stand out in the Democratic primary. The president looks forward to welcoming whoever wants to run.”

Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt, massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and North Carolina Sen. John Edwards are already seeking the Democratic nomination. Several others are said to be considering bids.

Lieberman was considered a prospect for 2004 as soon as the 2000 race was over, and he traveled from new Hampshire to California testing support. Gore took himself out of the 2004 race weeks ago, freeing Lieberman from his self-imposed pledge not to run if the former vice president did.

So I wrote a pretty long letter to the editor that they printed 1/17/03

Is Sen. Lieberman really a ‘different kind of Democrat?

Editor,

So I read that Sen. Lieberman is a “different kind of Democrat” ... now where have I heard that before? Could it be when Bill Clinton was campaigning? Yes, he was a different Democrat. At least different from the Democrats in my father’s time. Then the Democrats pushed hard work to get ahead and personal responsibility for your actions, faith with God, honesty and fairness.

Then Bill Clinton was president and it became the New Democrat Party... the party of perjury and obstruction of justice, the party of voter fraud, the party of race baiting, the party of class envy and class warfare, the party of appeasement. At least all Democrats stood by their man, so I guess that they condoned this behavior, which was different from the Democrats of my youth.

Then Al Gore started Running for president and he claimed to be a different Democrat. It seemed that he didn’t want to be know as member of the party that he had embraced and defended in the past eight years. He reinvented himself about every two weeks trying to find something that sounded good to the most people. I would think that as old as he was, he would know who he was before he ran for president but maybe not.

His running mate Joe Lieberman, a man I respected for his honesty, turned a 180 degrees and agreed with Al Gore 100% while running for VP. You had to keep track of Lieberman the Senator and Lieberman the VP candidate but they were two different people. I guess that is what a “different kind of Democrat” is, the one before the election and the one who votes totally different from what he promised to get elected.

What scares me the most is that the Democrats constantly put brakes in the way of the economy coming back before the next election because if it is a bad economy they will win. I heard that before 2000 and then 2002 and now they are saying it for the 2004 election. When is the time for America to have a good economy? Now? Or never if they have their way.

So is it really a “new Democrat of more of the same?

Well I didn’t have long to wait for an answer. on 1/21/03 they saved a 4 column section for the answer to my letter.

Clinton haters often lose track of the facts

Editor,

The letter in Friday’s paper critical of several of the Democratic presidential candidates was another pitiful example of the ravages to cognitive, logical thinking that results from pathological Clinton hatred.

As with the folks who believe the earth is only 10,000 years old, or those who reject clear evidence of global warming, people who so deeply despise the man consciously divorce themselves from reality.

The lady said Clinton made the Democratic party on of “perjury.” In reality, he was pursued by a rabid (I take offense to that dealing with rabid bats as I do) right-wing ( no offense here) jihad (BIG OFFENSE HERE) throughout his entire term and finally was trapped into a lie in response to a question about a personal relationship that should never have been asked in the first place. And it happened in a civil, not a criminal proceeding. Only one other time in the history of the US has a lie about an adulterous affair led to a perjury charge. Eighty years ago, it was, in a Texas divorce case.

If anyone wants to play dueling lies, the current president against the last one, I’m ready with facts, figures, dates and names. The man who occupies the White House today has no peer when it comes to obsfucation, deception and, yes, lying under oath. Type “funeralgate” and “Bush” into the Google search engine and enlighten yourself. Mister Bush also lied under oath when he told the judge in his DWI case in Maine that he only occasionally had a few beers. That was at a time when he now admits he had a serious drinking problem.

He has lied about his military service. He has lied about his business dealings. And he now lies to our faces every time he talks about the supposed dangers posed by Iraq.

The hate-Clinton bug causes strange apparitions. This lady, for example, said President Clinton made the Democrats into the party of obstruction of justice. How so? His White House accepted and complied with every single subpoena and court order.

George Bush has already surpassed Nixon in creating the most secretive administration in history. They don’t comply with Freedom of Information requests. They ignore judicial orders. Dick Cheney has refused to accept legal papers from the GAO in its investigation of his secret energy meetings. His guards threatened the process server with arrest. That in itself is a crime, one that is conveniently ignored by a judiciary of hand-picked ideologues in robes; the same judges who felt it was just fine to comb through every drawer and closet in the Clinton White House.

She called Democrats the party of voter fraud. Come again? Bush is in office in large part because of massive voter fraud in Florida. For a complete accounting, read “The Best Democracy Money can Buy” by investigative journalist Greg Palast. For quicker proof, just know the state of Florida settled the NAACP suit about that fraud out of court rather than go into a trail they knew they would lose. Jeb Bush’s government copped a plea.

Clinton hatred is a disease that is insidious and can be rationally explained. Only its loony symptoms are clearly displayed. As in the final paragraph of the good lady’s letter where she blames the Democrats for “putting the brakes” on the economy so they can win elections. Huh?! Clinton put his political neck on the line as he began is presidency with an economic policy that Republicans from GHW Bush to Gingrich to Dole and all the other Republicans to a man said would destroy America, sink us into a massive depression from which we would never recover. They were as wrong as the flat-earth society.

President Clinton gave us eight years of peace, prosperity and job growth. Crime decreased, literacy increased. His policies lifted millions of people out of poverty and off the welfare roles. The rest of the world respected the man and looked on with admiration and approval of the America he governed. I prey we can find another like him. Bit I am quite sure that if we do he will not be a member of the present day Republican party.

Thank you

name withheld to protect this poor deluded man

In order for that to be true he would have to repudiate the Democratic Party's penchant for preaching adultery, homosexuality, pornography, perversion, prostitution, obscenity, and abortion.

I don't know that it would be worth it to reply to such a person" as the one who wrote this letter, as you'd likely just provoke more of his/her nonsense, and wouldn't change his/her mind, anyway.

But, as to his point of the Clinton's replying to every subpoena, the writer neglects to say that the response was "I don't remember", or "I don't recall"!

Oh, and it's very interesting that the letter writer uses "prey" instead of "pray".

What about the Australians, Japanese and the Hungarians? Just because the Limeys have been the loudest about how proud they are to stand with us, let's not forget our OTHER allies who have provided us with support in this conflict. Remember, the Hungarians were nice enough to let in the Iraqi Exiles for training for the overthrow of Saddam.

The guy that wrote this a delusional moron! Not once does he bother to point out the fact that NOTHING Clinton did resulted in any of the claims he makes. From 1993 to 1995, Clinton had nothing but deficits, no welfare reform, high taxes, 2.5% economic growth at best, unemployement hovering around 5%, etc.

Only after the GOP took Congress in 1995 did welfare reform get passed, the ridiculous increases in government spending get slowed, the economy and the stock market take off (with lowering of captial gains tax rates), defense spending stopped it's decline, etc.

My favorite line of this delusional moron was about the impeachment when Clinton, under oath in a civil case, was "asked a question he shouldn't have been asked". Oh my, so now Clinton is some kind of Emperor or God? And these left wing morons call conservatives stupid?

Great Post!

Seems this guy missed the point about Lieberman and went back to defending Clinton.

It's not about hating Clinton, but they will never get over him being gone.

He also didn't say anything about the change in the Democrat party to the DemocRAT party. Just pretended it is still the same as it was. Am I losing my memory or did it used to be different?

Hi, it's Beverly, here.
First, does it matter where or why a lawyer lies under oath? (Criminal vs. civil, is he comfortable about the corruption of either sort of court?
Those entrusted with the leadership of the country - by the people of the country - obviously owe a higher standard of conduct to the country. But, possibly worse, this man lied in his own state court.

I'm a little prejudiced, I'll admit. But, anyone who is willing to infringe on the right to life is willing to infringe on any rights, given the opportunity and self-interest.
Anyone who could vote *against* a partial birth abortion ban has no conscience to speak of - sure couldn't count on it.

Well said.

Different? His ideological flip-flops identify him as willing to sell his convictions for power. Demonstrating this penchant is a requirement for membership in the party.

Sorry pal, your boy was dragged kicking and screaming into the signing of the welfare reform bill, by the Republican party. Clinton publicly stated he regretted signing it, AFTER it became law.

.....lifted millions of people out of poverty

You admit it! Thanks for the compliment!!

If you guys will take credit for this, it's no wonder you take credit for everything else that occurred during the Clinton years.
