GOP Senator Battles TIA Funding

A senior Republican senator joined efforts to prevent a fledgling Pentagon computer dragnet from invading the privacy of U.S. citizens while searching databases for terrorist threats.

Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, the Senate Finance Committee chairman, stopped short of embracing an attempt by Democrats to block all funding for the controversial Bush administration program, known as the Total Information Awareness project.

TIA as envisioned by Poindexter is toast. However, it's clear that the feds need to do something to improve their data mining and analysis techniques for their existing data streams, and I imagine Grassley does not want to throw out the entire TIA concept if there are a few positive aspects to it.

That's exactly why all Americans should get on their knees and thank God for Chuck Grassley. This "hick" Senator from Iowa is one of the few politicians whose integrity is impeccable. I hope Chuck never gives up the good fight. Agree with him or not, he's one of the few that has the standing and guts to go after the Pentagon and FBI.

Lend him your respect -- we need him during these trying times.
