DAMASCUS, Syria - Iraq is cooperating with its obligations under UN resolutions and has opened itself up for inspections, but "warmongers" in Washington are still trying to come up with a pretext to attack the country, an official Syrian newspaper said Monday.
The accusation came hours ahead of UN weapons inspectors' much-anticipated assessment to the UN Security Council of Iraq's performance in two months of inspections.
"The warmongers were betting on inspectors finding irrefutable evidence of Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction ... but this did not happen. They are still pinning 'hopes' on (the inspectors), fabricating an unexpected bunch of provocations and impossible demands," the daily Tishrin newspaper said in a front page editorial.
If that fails, hawks in Washington will "scrap the work of the inspectors and the reports of (Hans) Blix and (Mohammed) ElBaradei and start pounding Baghdad and other Iraqi cities with missiles, warplanes, destroying the infrastructure and killing thousands of people before taking control of (Iraqi) oil fields," it predicted.
Tishrin urged the United States to listen to world protests and anger and to use negotiation and dialogue instead of war rhetoric. Syria has been a vocal opponent of a US attack on Iraq.
With what we have there and on the way there, it is best for those countries that have put it to us in the past to real quiet and hope we don't look their way. My advice to Iran would be exactly the same, the guy in the oval office aint jimmy carter.
They do have enough brain to know a few things.
They know we've already noticed them.
They know that they have achieved the "next" spot on the list.
They know how easy it would be for V Corp to move west
once Northern Iraq is secure.
They know there's nothing they could do about it.
So they whine.
Point well made.
