On a deadly foggy day in London in late 1909, Chicago businessman William D. Boyce was hopelessly lost while searching the streets for the location of a business appointment. Then, at his elbow, a young man appeared, wearing a uniform. "Can I help you, sir?" When Mr. Boyce explained his problem, the young man guided Mr. Boyce to the address he was looking for. Mr. Boyce reached into his pocket and offered the young man a tip for his service. Much to his surprise, however, the young man refused. "I am a Scout, sir. I'm not allowed to take money for doing a good deed." And with that, the young man left.

Mr. Boyce was quite impressed, and after his business was concluded he investigated the Boy Scouts. After returning to America he worked to establish such an organization in the United States, and on February 9th of 1910 in Chicago William D. Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America. In the last 93 years the Boy Scouts of America have helped teach the values of citizenship, character, and fitness to mroe than 100 million young men.

The Scout's name was never discovered. But in England, there stands a bronze statue dedicated to the unknown Scout, erected by the BSA in gratitude.

Sorry about the personal post, but I thought it was a date that deserved mention. I'm also sorry it's a day late, but I was doing Scouting yesterday; we had 262 Scouts, Scouters, and parents in the woods at our Council's local Klondike Camporee, and I was Event Director and my wife was Steward, being in charge of feeding about 120 people breakfast and everyone on site lunch. A good time was had by all. There were 21 sleds in the Klondike Derby and at the morning's Scout Skills stations. Hope you all had a good day; I'm beat, and so is my wife.

I treasure the days(and cold nights camping)of my youth spent in Boy Scouts.

I'm glad we were not forced to integrate girls, or gays into the organization, and cut God out of the Law.

The Meaning of the Boy Scout Oath

Tnanks for your efforts Ron. A couple of week ago, my son and I were discussing the Klondike Derby that he participated in. He was so proud that he helped to win that.

The odd think is that the derby was over 15 years ago.

Originally thought to be a youth paramilitary training organization (and I was lucky to have been in one of that stripe - run by adults with combat time from WWII, ROK and some of the guys that came back from the 'nam)

Today, hard to say what is thought to be, I suppose it depends on what side you look from. Still, had a ton of fun and learned many good lessons from the folks that made up Troop 115

Interesting. I just returned home about two hours ago from a banquet honoring 134 scouts of the Ozark Trails Council who had achieved Eagle rank during 2002 (including my own son).

I hadn't known this was an important date in scouting until I came across this article.

Hey RonF - just came back from a Klondike Derby with my two sons. Our two teams placed very high up - out of forty-some troops - and we had a froooozen campout. But all the kids had a great time.
