If Saddam wants to avert war what's needed is not an empty declaration but actual and verifiable disarmament on the ground by his regime. To date that hasn't happened. This is mere propaganda from Saddam designed to stave off the inevitable but it won't work. Its time for a regime change in Baghdad NOW.

(sarcasm alert) Whew... thats a relief. We all know Saddam is a truthful man, a man without pretense or deception, so if he says WMD are now illegal what right do we have to question him???

Yes this paper declaration by the Saddamites undoubtedly means "Peace in Our Time" !!!!

Wait a minute, haven't we heard that one before???

I guess that's it, We can all sleep well now, we can bring our boys & equipment home now, Saddam has finally come around, SHEEESH that was a close one < /sarcasm >

Why would Saddam issue a proclamation about his WMD's? I thought Saddam didn't have any weapons of mass destruction

Oh! Goody! Couple this news with North Korea's promise circa 1994 to swear off Nukes and suddenly the world is a very safe place.

Well, time to take down my shrinkwrap from around the house ...

And isn't it ironic that Diane Sawyer is the one to make this monstrously unimportant announcement.

So now Saddam will go out (ahead of Inspector Blix) and "find" some WMD sites himself. "Mon Dieu", he will say. "I had no idea these vermin were brewing such evil in my country". Then he throws them in jail. Case solved. Crisis over. (At least that's the way the Weasels will see it).

Heard the same thing on FNC. Too little too late. It's easy to make a decree like that when you already have the WMD's.

Iraq Bans Weapons of Mass Destruction [Full Text] BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein issued a presidential decree Friday banning the importation or production of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons, or any materials that could be used to make them.

The decree was announced shortly before the chief U.N. weapons inspectors were to present new reports on Iraq's disarmament to the U.N. Security Council. The decree was issued, apparently, in response to repeated U.N. demands that Baghdad outlaw weapons of mass destruction.

"All ministries should implement this decree and take whatever measures are necessary and punish people who do not adhere to it," the presidential order read.

The decree banned individuals and companies from all sectors from importing or producing any material that could be used in the production of weapons of mass destruction. The Iraqi government insists it possesses no such weapons.

The decree came before Iraq's parliament was to meet in an emergency session to consider a similar piece of legislation on banning weapons. It was unclear how the presidential decree affected the parliament meeting.

In New York, chief U.N. weapons inspectors Hans Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei were to deliver their reports to the Security Council on Iraq's compliance in eliminating weapons of mass destruction.

The United States and Britain claim Iraq has not complied with the inspections, and have threatened to disarm Iraq by force if they are not convinced it is doing so on its own. [End]

Actually, I'm in favor of importing all kinds of weapons into Iraq. I guess Saddam is hoping that such importation will not occur.

But it's gonna.

George W. isn't buying it.

and went to a story on heart attacks.

Now that's not fair. I just saw the alert on the 1 hour midwestern tape delay. The "heart attack story" is an interview with THE FIRST FREAKING LADY OF THE UNITED STATES, a person whom I admire greatly, and included her b-slapping the media for overblowing these terror alerts.
