Penguin poo threatens Antarctic hut

One of the oldest, most precious buildings in the Antarctic is being threatened - by penguin poo!

The hut was the first dwelling ever to be built on the Antarctic, and it was done by Norwegian explorer Carsten Borchgrevink way back in 1899.

It's withstood the icy Antarctic weather for decades, but now it's at risk because of penguin poo.

Repairs would cost £1.2m

It's thought there's at least 100,000 Adelie penguins in the area.

And they like to go the loo around the edges of the hut, but now it's actually piled up against the outside walls and is damaging the building.

The harsh weather is finally starting to take its toll too, so the hut's in really bad shape.

Environmentalists reckons it would cost at least £1.2 million to repair the hut.

They're now calling on the United Nations to help fund the work.

They're now calling on the United Nations to help fund the work.

Considering recent UN actions, this seems like an appropriate task for them.

Why can't those darned animals learn to be more humane! Maybe PETA can use some of their funding to build penguin potties.

Maybe I'm having a case of the stupids, but I can't remember what nation claims Antartica. Britain?

Chile and Argentina are the only ones that claim parts of it. Other nations have agreed to use it internationally and non-territorially for scientific research.

Agreed, this is more in the line of something the UN is fit for but aside from that, this has to be one of the most inane if not laughable stories of the day...and just what do they plan to do with the Penguins? You just gotta love those environmentalists..........

Actually, your question prompted me to investigate further and I've found that it's more complicated than I thought...

How's about we just send a UN delegation down there with some shovels? Heh heh heh.

£1.2 million to repair this:

That is about $2 million US to repair a building that was built to be temporary in 1899. For that kind of money you can build a very nice visitors center to keep visitors warm while they view the ever growing pile of penguine poo.

I have suggested that the UN be moved to the Antarctic. I think we have just found the new UN headquarters building.
