I read this entire thread to see if anybody put "El Paso" by Marty Robbins down, and sure enough, there it is. That's the one that runs through my head, including the accompaniment. Seriously. I can hear the entire thing. Right now. Thanks a WHOLE lot. ;-D

Who WAS the guy who did the guitar stuff on El Paso? It's so cheerful, intricate...it doesn't match the words at all...I'll never forget it...

The song that pops into my head unbidden and stays for hours is the theme to the TV version of:
The Odd Couple!
Hum a few bars and you'll see what I mean.

Well, ever since I saw
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind a few weeks back, I can't seem to get
Palisades Park out of my head, although I do have the tendency to get the lyrics wrond every once in a while:
We Made love at a Hot Dog Stand...etc., etc. But hey, you'll never know how good a kiss could feel when you're stuck at the top of a ferris wheel, where I fell in love, down at Palisades Park.

I suppose you can guess what era I came of age! And 30 years later, these songs (and many others) continue to pop into my head, even though I haven't heard them on the radio for decades now. OOGA CHACKA OOGA OOGA! OOGA CHACKA OOGA OOGA! I CAN'T STOP THIS FEELING, DEEP INSIDE OF ME!!!

Often what gets sticky is not just a tune, but also lyrics, a trend he calls "stupid lyrics syndrome." I was drunk the day my Momma got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
My Momma, she got run over by a da?ned old train.

Oh, that's cruel! I'd better listen to some Captain Beefheart to get that one out of my head.
You use me for an ashtray heart!
Case of the punks--right from the start!...
Actually,
Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs starts with a hilarious discussion of this tendency. I recommend this book to everyone--I bought it one day and read it aloud while riding home, and the driver had to pull over because he was laughing so hard. We both were, actually; the book renders The Abdominizer superfluous!
