Students of Anthony Sarkis expressed hope Monday that the Shaler Area High School English teacher won't lose his job for bringing a pistol to school.

"I'd feel bad for him if he lost his job over this," said senior Greg Miller, 18, of Shaler. Miller said he took a media literacy class with Sarkis two years ago. "He was a really good teacher. He gets along with kids really well. He made sure you knew your stuff."

Slightly OT, but how do you get a list of posts to the bang list?

This teacher ought to get the National Medal of Freedom, since he demostrated that he was willing to protect our children if they fell under attack at school.

What "fools" these adults are that think that a police station ten miles distant will keep their children alive is a crazy gun owning criminal shows up to shoot. If he is that far gone you think he will have a gun license?

What absolute stupidity. They ought to put liberals in jail and charge them with treason to the state.

Gally said police were called to the school after other teachers found the gun.

So his colleagues ratted him out to the police instead of just taking the gun and finding out whose it was. Very nice.

PS: If pilots get guns to defend against hijack, how come teachers don't get them to thwart Columbines?

Your analogy makes perfect sense to me. However, I would dare say that most teachers wouldn't know the difference between a shotgun and a piece of chicken.

Those who lack knowledge of guns are likely to fear and avoid them. Just like those who lack knowledge of computers do the same.

As much as I believe in the right to keep and carry, I pause at the thought of giving the full right of concealed carry to any unionized teacher.

My guidance counselor used to pack heat in school. Told me so himself. Had one on him, and another in his glove box.

And so did my girlfriend. She used to carry a semi-auto in her book bag. Myself, I carried a 4 inch dagger with an ivory handle (yes, real ivory, inherited from my great granddad). Why not? Who knows when you might need it? And I could whittle sticks on my walk home.

What he should get charged with is negligence. Specifically for not keeping his weapon secured and/or in his possesion at all times.

Is he that careless to NOT know which bag he left it in? Obviously in this case the teachers lounge is not a secure location. If not his car, then perhaps a handy locker might have been a better choice.
