So, now the old conspiracy about "it's all about the oil" has been cast aside.
The new and improved conspiracy is: "all about the dollar to buy the oil"

what utter horse manure.
Actually, we are going to war with Iraq because the Aliens at Area 51 are stealing the world's water.
why not?
It makes as much sense as this crap!

I'm gonna scream the next time I hear "The real reason for the war is..."
What's next, "The real reason is because of aliens?"
I guess that would be the Raliens!
Why can the not accept that the real reason is Sadam?
Talk about denial!! Why can they not get it through their thick heads that there is a real reason for things that don't include their demented thinking?
To: demlosers
BS or not, you had better worry about it.
This angle is liable to get allot more traction than the ole' stand by: "Dubya is doing it only for his rich, rich, rich oil buddies in Texas"

This article is absurd. The Euro has been in a technical uptrend for 16 months. I trade Euro futures and have made an absolute killing being long in this currency over the past year. If Bush wanted to squash the Euro than his policy has been a total failure. The Euro has gained 10% against the dollar in the past 4 months alone--a staggering gain for a currency.

You have to admit, it is more creative than the "for his oil pals" angle..
Also, note the website. "EV World" is a site dedicated to electric, hybrid & fuel cell vehicles.

Dollars are one of our more important exports: still, I don't see how this drives a war agaisnt Iraq.
The theory put forth by the author suggests that if Iraq, Iran and others switched from the dollar to the euro for trade then we would lose this benefit, become swamped with dollars streaming back into our economy and collapse as a result.
That's supposed to be the motivation for war as well as the reason for naming, Iraq, Iran and North Korea as our enemies.

From my perspective the article has merit.
The problem with the author's premise is that he does not believe that this financial threat is also a real strategic threat. Like so many who attempt to deceive, he uses the time honored ploy of not even questioning that this threat is sufficent to go to war.
From my perspective this is another good justifcation to go to war and it'll be added to my talking points.
Thanks for the post.

I think it has merit also.
It would merit the left greatly, as it's much more plausible than the "oil buddies" scenario.
IMO, The problem with the "strategic threat" argument is that I don't believe a majority of Americans will concur that this is sufficient cause to go to war.
If the author is right about the motivation, then we would be doing nothing more than forcing others to prop up our economy at gun point. Telling them, in effect: "Use dollars or we will take over your country and install someone who will.."
I don't think you can sell that to Americans by and large. I don't think it will fly, as we are a moral people.
I know I wouldn't support it.

This Man is running for President? What a crock. The Administration has purposefully abandoned the support for the dollar for over 6 months now. It is increasing our exports and putting a strain on our imports. If it was true economic value that was driving the exchange the EURO would be trading at $.80 to those bankrupt coutries. I am happy that we are finally put the screws to the the EU. Let them deal with it. Unfortunately, right after the war the Dollar will be gaining strength again :)
To: Amerigomag
Well, if the dollar falls another 40% against the Euro as this theory goes, European imports to the US would essentially drop to zero. What is the EU going to do without being able to export to the US? They have no internal consumer economies of their own to consume the goods they produce, where will they send them?
Also, where will all these Euros come from? The EU would have to start issuing Euros to exchange for all the dollars being repatriated.
If this concept were indeed an engineered scheme by Iraq and the EU to destroy the US economy, while at the same time using domestic terror against us, I certainly would support it using the military to thwart it. And so would most Americans in the face of an economic depression.

Unfortunately, right after the war the Dollar will be gaining strength again :) Very true. I will be taking profits on my long positions soon after we invade.
To: Jhoffa_
Some of what this guy says is true. Every American reaps the befits of the US dollar being the world's reserve currency. Our huge trade deficits are much easier to slough off due to our dollar being the foremost reserve currency.
Two factors that make the dollar strong and enhance it's reserve currency status
- A US military that can project force abroad and protect the USA.
- A successful US operation in Iraq (with help from UK and Australia)
Maybe this guy is right and this really is a battle between the EU (France Germany) and the USDollar $ (United States and UK) and I want the USA to win
