[history]
KECKSBURG, Pa. -- Dec. 9, 1965. A day that will live in incongruity.
That was the late afternoon when something -- or nothing -- shot from the heavens over this south edge of Westmoreland County and landed -- or didn't -- in a gully a mile outside of town.

The wreckage bore markings Romansky likens to hieroglyphics. Nobody touched it. People who figure that something indeed hit the ground suggested origins ranging from extraterrestrials to a misfired NIKE missile to a remnant of Kosmos 96, a Soviet probe that was bound for Venus but, according to U.S. Space Command, crashed in Canada 14 hours earlier.
Come to think of it, Russian does look like hieroglyphics to the untrained eye.

This is weird !!!! I was a senior in high school when this happened . I had an early morning paper route in the Wilkes Barre, Pa area . I remember that morning because something passed overhead ( it was still dark ) and looked like it was in flames. It even made noise . There was nothing written about it in the papers in the following days. I was and still am an avid follower of the space program and have always wondered if it was a meteorite that landed somewhere. The direction it was travelling was SW to NE ( as far as I can remember) . This is on the other side of the state from Pittsburgh, so I would like to know if it was related . Burned in my memory .

Well, if it passed over you in Wilkes Barre, it would have to have been going in the opposite direction to land in Kecksburg.

Surely there is still a stump left from the 2500 foot oak tree this fell from.

An appropriate Tariff policy would prevent these uninvited alien manufactures.

I am implying that it was headed my way and there was more of it that didn't land in the Kecksburg area .. Only the Men In Black ( trenchcoats) know for sure . Could have happened hours later or earlier if there was something in orbit at that longitude .
