You nailed it! During WW II, pilots and air crew never had any idea where the heck their targets would be or even in which direction they were flying until they attended the imperative briefings. The same thing was true in Korea and Viet Nam. You got your flying orders, weather reports, flight instructions and THE TARGET only then during the pre-flight briefings that occurred just before takeoff. Such info was never, but never radioed while the planes in the air! The article is pure Barbara Streisand.

Possibly. In a conventional conflict you want suprise, but in this instance, I think we want a sense of inevitabilty. Saddam is only as popular as he is feared, if the perception is that there is an unstoppable boulder rolling down hill to crush his regime, then his military officers would gladly get out of its way. However, if his military feels uncertain, they will be too afraid to show disloyalty.
