People who do not have Irish roots or are not familiar with Irish folklore have probably wondered, at one time or another, what is a shillelagh?
"Shillelagh" is an old Irish word for a stout, short, oak cudgel or club.

My father keeps my grandfathers shillelagh under the bed in case of burgulars.
He always told me it was an "Irish walking stick" but given that the thing is only about 18 inches long it would have to be a staff for leprechauns only :

Shillelagh and Sheridan ...
I'll bet that the Airborne/Airmobile boys will wish they still had these with them if they get dropped into Northern Iraq ...

Following is
"an Irish pub song", allegedly sung in the pubs when English soilders were around. The basic idea was to sing it until a fight broke out or until the other guys left.
Ireland was Ireland when England was a pup.
Ireland will be Ireland when England doubles up.
So, pour me another glass of beer, my little Irish
lass, and all you limey son of a guns, can kiss my
Irish....Ireland was Ireland...
(repeat until fight starts)

My grandmother has walked with a shillelagh for as long as I can remember.
Growing up as a kid, step out of line and you would have 1 helluva knot on your head. She wasn't shy about giving you a good rap when you needed it.
To this day, 2 broken hips, 2 foot surgeries and losing her mind, I will lay odds on that "old, Irish broad" (her phrase) any day of the week. Put it this way, I'm not messin' with her.
