A wave of B-52 bombers are set to hit Iraq within the hour, according to reports.
Eleven of the giant warplanes took off from RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire shortly earlier.
The plane has been in service with the United States Air Force since 1955.
It established its fearful reputation with carpet bombing raids during the Vietnam War.
More recently, it has seen service in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Yugoslavia.

I believe the Republican Guards in the ring defense around Baghdad are the ones going to have a rough night, especially to the west and south of the city.

Actually it's been on all the networks. I think it's part of a mind game we are playing on Saddam.

I agree. This eliminates the element of surprise. It's stupid.

The plane has been in service with the United States Air Force since 1955. Just wanted to remind Freepers that the B-52's flying today are B-52H's and haven't been in the inventory since 1955. B-52H's the latest version are upgraded as much as any plane in the inventory.

Why would you tell the whole world about this??? I bet those bomber crews appreciate it alot. Bomber crews are safe. This is meant to send the Iraqis screaming. They're getting notice, then the buffs will drop mile-long chains of 500 lb bombs, and blow everything all to hell.
Then we'll announce the next wave of buffs....

Doesn't matter, they won't be flying anywhere near Iraq. They'll launch the cruise missiles from over Turkey or Saudi Arabia.
Anyway, we watched that take off live on Sky and the BBC and ITN and Fox, they all had it. No secret.

It's stupid for SkyNews or any news outlet to tell the Iraqis when to leave their trenches, or go into bunkers.

Of course the departure has been all over the news for HOURS, so it's not like there hasn't been plenty of opportunity for the bad guys to find out.

Its hard to pinpoint your bombing run in a B-52.You are still fighting your father's war.
