Not sure what the situation is now, but when I was a chaplain on active duty the majority of the immans were African-American converts - many church-going people.
Again, not sure how it is now, but in those years (I retired 8 years ago), true "Arab" Muslims did not consider the African-American converts as true Muslims. There conversions were seen to be more a political statement than a true religious conversion based on convictions that Islam was the "True Way."

Frank Gaffney was on FOX News this afternoon railing about the possibility that Muslim Military Chaplains might be teaching that fighting against the Iraqis is not allowed by Islam. He was concerned that this Black Muslim soldier may have been influenced by some mullah. I don't know if that's the case. Sounds like the guy had lots of 'issues' to make him go off on his fellow soldiers like that!
