Make-shift rooms were set up to examine patients with any signs of pneumonia just outside the Emergency department of Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) in Singapore Saturday, March 22, 2003. TTSH has stopped admitting patients to its emergency department and ICU wards as an enhanced precautionary measures to break the transmission of the mystery illness, and to free up TTSH's resources to isolate and treat all pneumonia patients for the next two weeks. AP
SINGAPORE (AP) - Singapore's health minister said the city-state would devote one of its main hospitals to only treating patients with a mysterious flu-like illness that has sickened 51 people locally and hundreds worldwide.
Tan Tock Seng Hospital, which houses the Communicable Diseases Centre, will now only admit patients suspected of having severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, said Health Minister Lim Hng Kiang on Saturday. Other patients there would be transferred out.
