I don't think Mr. Cochran nor the ACLU will be of much help to Mr. Kools. If reports are accurate, he committed a treasonous act of murder, in the U.S. military, while at war on foreign soil. He is now at the mercy of a field court-martial conducted by his commanding officer, should said officer wish to conduct one. If he is found guilty by that court martial, it's quite possible (even likely) that he will be put to death for his crime.
And that can all happen in accord with the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Within a matter of a few weeks, if they decide to expedite matters.
