Well ... I suspect the meeting at the Pentagon this morning was to discuss this very question.

This is the same BS we suffered in Nam. Wnning their hearts won't work there either. Requests to RETURN fire were denied because it came from a FRIENDLY village. We are not dealing with a Judeo-Christian culture and value system (except in the media). The Arab culture sees compassion as a contemptable weakness. They won't "like" anything they don't respect.

I just love all the armchair generals around here. Our Generals didn't ascend to their position by being stupid and incompetent despite what some of you losers think. You can talk Clinton pc army, etc all you like but I have full confidence in our military and our leaders. I do too. There are rational reasons for both strategies here, both being extra careful for civillians, and for being extra careful for American lives. This debate is a fair one, where reasoned people could fall on either side, and frustrations will always happen in war, where nothing is exactly according to plan. The other side also has a plan.
One thing I do know, it is insulting and unhelpful to malign the motivations of the generals and leadership who have stressed all care be taken to avoid a civillian massacre. That is the moral choice they made, and to call it 'PC' as if that is not a moral goal, is unfair and bankrupt.

I agree. Bush needs to end this garbage about the religion of peace and stop insulting the memo of the 3000 murdered on 9/11. We are not children and we can handle the truth about the cult of the satanic moongod. This is not a Jihad.... we don't do those. If you think our guys over there are in danger now, with most fighting half-interested on the other side, lets just imagine if we went in there intent on slaughter. I think they would find themselves fighting not just scared and hastily armed children, but an entire region that very much will fight for their survival if they think it is genocide.

Here-Here! I agree whole-heartedly, Leatherneck....remember, people, a war is made up of many battles, it is still possible to lose a battle and win the war.
Keep your resolve and remain strong & true to this cause!

I go one better....find a little patch of empty desert really really close to Baghdad, then drop the MOAB, have General Tommy Franks come on and say "oops, we missed, we meant to hit Baghdad" and see how many of their troops keep fighting!!! :D
ok...so that's a little extreme...but show of force, baby!

But don't these folks know that we're here to liberate them - just like the Vietnamese?I'm reading now about regular Iraqis rising up against Sadaam's troops in Basra and Najaf. It took them a few days to figure out that we're not leaving them in the lurch this time like we did in 91. We don't have to listen to the UN, so we can go all the way to Baghdad. I guess these folks are now beginning to believe that, so they're willing to fight against Sadaam because they believe that this time he won't be back to brutalize them after we're gone.

O.K, allow them to surrender, but make them take all their clothes off including shoes so we know they aren't armed! Then give them wide striped neon orange and white pajamas and shocking pink turbans.

I just realized from reading your reply to me that we may be pulling a typical Democratic Party trick on the weaker powers of the world. By attaching Lawyers to our units to define what is proper use of deadly force in a manner that is consistent with our technological advantage, we can for some time to come, claim that use of deadly force not consistent with our self imposed restrictions, amounts to just plain negligent or reckless disregard for life, or murder (a war crime). This could be a basis for us accusing anyone who does not place the same restrictions on themselves, that we place on our selves, a war criminal. The fact that they may not have the technological capability to fight consistent with those new rules of war will be made to appear not rellivant. We will just focus in on the horror of their acts, that have always accompanied war of the past, and then call them barbarians (in otherwords guilty as charged).
If I got this right, wow. Not bad.
Thanks for the article.

I agree. This pussyfooting around without damaging the Baghdad infrastructure and this fear of harming,or even inconveniencing civilans,is going to be our downfall.
War isn't pretty and I hope it's over soon,as we all do.

Amen! I will add that I hope the American people will not falter in their support for the troops!
To: Stavka2
deal with it We are dealing with it ... a lot better than you guys in Chechnya. What a bunch a grade-A losers you are. Go "deal" with yourself.
To: The Toll
I think the government would be wise to roll some bomb impact footage like in 91. It would make the media shut up for a minute. Plus the morons watching Al Jazeera would get over themselves. Excellent suggestion.
To: Gumption
First of Gump, I've served 10.5 years in the US army, so shove it up your arse. Second of all, you are a clueless twit since I'm sure you have no frigging clue about anything that goes on in Chechnya, where some of my friends and relatives have served. Stupid is as stupid does, or says in this case...and you've once more upheld that notion.

If you're going to start this stupid war, at least fight it right and finish it. It's obvious to me that your heart and mind is not with the U.S. but still with your Soviet comrades. I don't care if you served 50 yrs. in the U.S. military. That being said, you should save your advice for the country you truly care about, Russia. They could use it.
Your true colors were evident to me when you denied that the U.S. supplied your country with a lifeline of food and materials while the Nazis occupied half of your homeland, even after I supplied you with the long list of goods. Again I'll say, your welcome.
To: Gumption
Oh, that's right, in the US autocracy, any deviation from the government line is to be treated accordingly...why thank you for clarifying that for me. And here I was under the impression that in America people were allowed to have varied opinions. So sweet of you to point out the truth.
As for the Soviets, they are as dead as your autocratic day dreams. Get over it.
