The most prominent personalities in the antiwar movement resist all efforts to classify their angry activism as anti-American. But Sunday night's Oscar extravaganza obliterated such defensive distinctions. For 3

The good news about the Oscars was the low ratings.

Leno got off a good line about Michael Moore last night. He said he mad about being booed. He hadn't been that mad since being charged for two seats on Southwest Airlines.

Message to the architects who designed the Kodak Theater: the doors are too narrow to allow passage of the swelled heads of Hollywood.

Impassioned demonstrators outside the Oscar ceremony waved American flags and carried signs declaring "Support Our Troops" and "Impeach Sheen."

"the mounting backlash to celebrity leftists raises the possibility of permanent damage to Hollywood's standing."

One can hope.

Well, I'm one of those folks who always watch, but I sure didn't this time. My only regret is that while visiting my Mom I managed (unfortunately) to catch the part with Sarandon, Streisand, & Brody. Gag, gag, & gag!

I was happy to hear the host of American Idol on Fox last night open the show by pointing out that our troops are the real American Idols. Excellent point. Could it be that Hollywood "stars" are jealous of the troops, the real American stars?

On Oscar night, the contrast between our struggling troops in Iraq and the stars who wouldn't support their efforts proved too glaring to ignore--or forget.

I know I won't!

I agree. Steve Martin's comments were for the troops, but Steve's a class act. Most of the Hollyweird ingrates shamed the nation with their self absorbed display of narcissism.

"They offered no hint of gratitude, affection, loyalty or connection to the superpower that sustains them."

I am hoping that celebrity leftists are actually causing themselves damage. Not sure what you may have thought I meant. Perhaps you hope everyone will continue to be happy with them?

WEEKLY COLUMN -- February 20, 2001

The USO Celebrates 60 Years of Service

In February 1941, just as the United States suddenly found itself at war after the attack on Pearl Harbor and formulating plans to fight the war, the United Service Organization (USO) was established to provide morale, welfare, and recreation-type services to uniformed military personnel.

The USO followed the troops everywhere they went in World War II to extend a "touch of home" to servicemen and women and help them forget the horrors of combat, if only for a few hours. Cultural icons like Bob Hope, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra, the Andrews Sisters, and the brightest stars in wartime Hollywood were enlisted by the USO to accomplish their wartime morale boosting mission.

On the homefront, the USO organized dances, established canteens, community centers and travel support offices and continued providing quality entertainment from cultural landmarks like the Hollywood Canteen and Radio City Music Hall to hand-rigged recreation centers on remote military bases from Maine to Alaska.

After World War II, the USO built upon its previous successes and continued to provide entertainment and support to troops around the world. When new conflicts arose in Korea and Vietnam, the USO again provided top quality entertainers like Judy Garland, Ann-Margaret, and John Wayne.

Operation Desert Storm saw the USO once again follow our troops to set up shows in the desert with the indomitable Bob Hope, along with Steve Martin, Dolly Parton, Jay Leno, and many other popular entertainers...

If you remember post September 11th the Oscars held a moment of silence for the victims of the World Trade Center attacks but left out the Pentagon, Pennsylvania, and the men and women fighting in Afghanistan. Their ceremony was par for the course.

Thank you. That was a good read. At least Peter O'Toole gets it. Without the nation these people loathe, they'd be nothing.

The new line from some of the "anti-war" protesters is "we support our troops, that's why we want to bring them home now!" Most of what could be construed as supportive sentiments at the Oscars sounded like this.

I was actually surprised at how many of the limo riders flashed the "peace" sign. They really believe we'll still love them.
