After seeing all the great pictures of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and some lame comments I read from an anti-war person berating the US regarding Afghanistan (basically saying we wrecked their country and now "we never hear about Afghanistan anymore"), I was prompted to find photos and publicize what a turnaround it's been for the Afghans, and how we are helping them rebuild their country.

Afghan schoolgirls in class, many of them for the first time.

Two Afghan girls among the returning refugees in the village of Qarabagh, north of Kabul,
where U.S. funds support several projects to promote the reintegration of refugees.

Workers load food onto wheelbarrows for distribution to returning Afghan refugees in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif.
The U.S. contributes more than 70 percent of all food aid given to Afghans through the World Food Programme (WFP).

I'm really tired of the world complaining about the US.

Re: the last picture.
Two of the Afghani men look as if they're wearing nightshirts. Is that standard dress (no pun intended) over there?

I've seen them alot, they seem to be an everyday shirt-robe type of thing. The Afghan dress is an interesting mixture of regional influences. There are some items, such as the intricate embroidery and beading you can see in the girl's top, that are distinctive.
This site has alot of great pictures:

That thing is called a 'khameez.' It is the source of French and English words like 'chemise', 'camise', and 'camisole.' It's a cognate with 'qam' which is an Arabic root for 'shirt.'

Many thanks for posting these pictures and links. It is nice to be reminded, every now and again, that America can do a great deal of good, behind the scenes, without a lot of fanfare. The smiling faces and the purposeful pursuit of a better life in Afghanistan, make me so proud that we are still there helping. We didn't bomb them back to the stone age, we are bringing them forward to a hopeful future.

Thank you very much...
It's been disheartening lately to see and hear all the negative commentary, when in fact as a country and people we do good works that far outweigh our missteps.
