Metallica-For Whom the Bell Tolls
Encyclopedia Metallica ^ | Unknown | Christian Herwig

Posted on 03/28/2003 10:26:09 PM PST by Pro-Bush

The inspiration: The lyrics of the song "For Whom The Bell Tolls" are based on the same titled Ernest Hemmingway novel, "For Whom The Bell Tolls" which is about an American who is given the job of taking out a bridge held by the Fasist army in the Spanish Civil War - the precurser to the World War II. He fell in love and then found out very disturbing things about life and death.

The subject matter: The song "For Whom The Bell Tolls" is about a scene of the Ernest Hemmingway novel where - one morning - five soldiers were taking a position on a hill and they get killed by an airstrike.

For Whom The Bell Tolls-Metallica Released: 1984

Make his fight on the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey On the fight, for they are right, yes, by who's to say? For a hill men would kill, why? They do not know Suffered wounds test there their pride Men of five, still alive through the raging glow Gone insane from the pain that they surely know

For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls

Take a look to the sky just before you die It is the last time you will Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery He hears the silence so loud Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be Now the will see what will be, blinded eyes to see

For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls

While most people here probably do not "get" Metallica, I do. Thanx for the post. I had almost forgotten about that song.

There is a large amount of GenX-ers that grew up on heavy metal that are pretty conservative. I guess the well nurtured cynicism in us killed a lot of the goofy liberal ideas the hippie crowd tried to sell us while we came of age.

Hemingway, got the title from another author, John Donne.

"Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls: it tolls for thee."
- John Donne, For Whom the Bell Tolls

It is a quote from a longer essay of John Donne's by that same title "FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS"

http://poetseers.org/greats/john_donne/for_whom_the_bell_tolls

John Donne(1572-1631) was the most outstanding of the English Metaphysical Poets and a churchman famous for his spellbinding sermons.

Metalica based many of their earlier songs on other peoples writings. Listen to "Creeping Death", pretty much straight from the movie The Ten Commandments, or "One", which I think was based on Johny Get Your Gun(???). I used to like them in the early eighties, seems my tastes have changed in my old age.

Agreed. I'm very conservative and upon reading this thread clicked on "For Whom the Bell tolls" in Music Match :)

I suspect most of those of us who graduated from high school in the mid eighties still like old Metallica.

Of course, I'm musically confused, I can go from Tool to Enya, to Yanni and back to deftones and in the space of 30 minutes.

I'm a 42 year-old mom of two teenagers. I love a lot of Metallica's stuff, but 'discovered' it in a tragic way. One of my daughter's classmates was terminally ill with bone cancer. He received a Make-A-Wish trip to California to meet and play with the band. He was a drummer and a neat, neat kid. What Metallica did for him was outstanding.

After he died, the kids at the HS raised money for a memorial music room in the school. Metallica sent autographed posters and music to put in it.

That's when I started listening to their music and I have many favorites, but today I'm really thinking of "Hero of the Day".

God Bless our heroes in Iraq.

Young voters in the 1980s supported Reagan by a 2-1 margin, a fact that had the Dims crapping their pants. Indeed, I suspect whiny "alternative" was pushed on us by the record companies partly for this reason.

As for /V\etallica:

Don't Tread on Me from the "Black Album", 1990(?)

Liberty or death, what we so proudly hail
once you provoke her, rattling of her tail
never begins it, never, but once engaged...
never surrenders, showing the fangs of rage

don't tread on me

so be it
threaten no more
to secure peace is to prepare for war
so be it
settle the score
touch me again for the words that you'll hear evermore...

don't tread on me

love it or live it, she with the deadly bite
quick is the blue tongue, forked as lighting strike
shining with brightness, always on surveillance
the eyes, they never close, emblem of vigilance

don't tread on me

so be it
threaten no more
to secure peace is to prepare for war
so be it
settle the score
touch me again for the words that you'll hear evermore...

don't tread on me

so be it
threaten no more
to secure peace is to prepare for war

liberty or death, what we so proudly hail

so be it
threaten no more
to secure peace is to prepare for war

don't tread on me

For Whom The Bell Tolls

Written by BARRY, ROBIN and MAURICE GIBB

Now I know there'll be times like this
When I couldn't reach out to no-one
Am I never gonna find someone
Who knows me like you do
Are you leaving me a helpless child
When it took so long to save me
Fight the devil and the deep blue sea
I'll follow you anywhere
I promise I'll be there

I thought the Justice CD was their best. Like "Moving Pictures" from Rush, they will never top it.

I didn't say I hated Justice, I've got them all up to the Black album or whatever its official name is.

The guitar solos in Ride the Lightning and Master give me goose bumps and so do the ones on Justice to a lesser extent.

My questions is, what happened on the black album, was Kirk Hammett's guitar even plugged in? I haven't listened to any of their latest albums but a friend of mine was saying last week that the latest one had gone techno? Was he joking or is that true, since I find it hard to believe.

Not sure - they have gone "alternative". I thought they screwed over Jason Newstead as well. Hammett is a great guitarist - I wonder if he had classical training from some of his solos.

Next thing you know, Slayer will be doing Ace of Base covers :)

Creeping Death

Slaves
Hebrews born to serve, to the pharaoh
Heed
To his every word, live in fear
Faith
Of the unknown one, the deliverer
Wait
Something must be done, four hundred years

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

Now
Let my people go, land of goshen
Go
I will be with thee, bush of fire
Blood
Running red and strong, down the nil
Plague
Darkness three days long, hail to fire

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

Die by my hand
I creep across the land
Killing first born man
Die by my hand
I creep across the land
Killing first born man

I
Rule the midnight air the destroyer
Born
I shall soon be there, deadly mass
I
Creep the steps and flood final darkness
Blood
Lambs blood painted door, I shall pass

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

Hammet learned his chops from Joe Satriani and it shows.
What did they do to Jason Newstead? I think he did a great job after Burton's brutal and untimely death.

As the Bass player, in a band with two great guitar players, you're not gonna get a twenty minute solo. Imagine how Michael Anthony feels.

He felt they never respected him as a full band member, just Cliff's replacement. I was looking at it from his POV - maybe he was wrong.

Seek And Destroy

We are scanning the scene in the city tonight
We are looking for you to start up a fight
There is an evil feeling in our brains
But it is nothing new
you know it drives us insane

Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy

There is no escape
and that is for sure
This is the end we won't take any more
Say goodbye
to the world you live in
You have always been taking
but now you're giving

Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy

Our brains are on fire
with the feeling to kill
And it will not go away
until our dreams are fulfilled
There is only one thing
on our minds
Don't try running away
`cause you're the one we will find

Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy

I'll see you and raise you two, from: http://www.leoslyrics.com/index.jsp (great site!!!!)

Ride the Lightning:

Guilty as charged
But damn it, it ain't right
There is someone else controlling me

Death in the air
Strapped in the electric chair
This can't be happening to me

Who made you God to say
"I'll take your life from you!"

Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flames

Wait for the sign
To flick the switch of death
It's the beginning of the end

Sweat, chilling cold
As I watch death unfold
Consciousness my only friend

My fingers grip with fear
What I am doing here?

Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flames

Someone help me
Oh please God help me
They are trying to take it all away
I don't want to die

Time moving slowly
The minutes seem like hours
The final curtain call I see

How true is this?
Just get it over with
If this is true, just let it be

Wakened by the horrid cream
Freed from the frightening dream

Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flames

Master of Puppets:

End of passion play, crumbling away
I'm your source of self-destruction
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear
Leading on your deaths' construction

Taste me you will see
More is all you need
You're dedicated to
How I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master

Needlework the way, never you betray
Life of death becoming clearer
Pain monopoly, ritual misery
Chop your breakfast on a mirror

Taste me you will see
More is all you need
You're dedicated to
How I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master

Master, master, where's the dreams that I've been after?
Master, master, you promised only lies
Laughter, laughter, all I hear or see is laughter
Laughter, laughter, laughing at my cries

Hell is worth all that, natural habitat
Just a rhyme without a reason
Neverending maze, drift on numbered days
Now your life is out of season

I will occupy
I will help you die
I will run through you
Now I rule you too

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master

Metallica's new album "St. Anger" is released on June 10.. which is also the scheduled date for the release of Ann Coulter's new book. Could a day get any better?

As for the bassist situation. Earlier this month Metallica announced that Robert Trujillio (previously of Suicidal Tendencies, and Ozzy Osbourne's band) is now their bassist (yes, its permanent!!) Which is sort of ironic because former bassist Jason Newsted is now with Ozzy after a few failed endeavors with the bands Echobrain and (complete Metallica ripoff) Voivod.

On Metallica's "Jump in the Studio" section of their website (www.metallica.com) you can watch the posted videos from the studio.. view pictures and read about the daily happenings in the studio. The site chronicalled the recording of the whole album. It's in mastering and post-production now, and Lars has even hinted that the release date may be earlier than expected. I personally have heard a few song clips on the Jump in the Studio page and it sounds NOTHING like anything they've done previously... it's completely different from Load and ReLoad.. no blues this time.. pure metal.

Metallica will be hitting the road this summer for their Summer Sanitarium tour across the US. I have 1st row tickets for the show in Columbus, Ohio that a friend and I got through the official metallica fanclub. (www.metclub.com)

"Fade to Black" was the first song I ever learned to play the whole way through. Metallica is a large portion of the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place.

As far as musical inspiration goes, probably the best example is their classic "The Call of Ktulu," also on Ride the Lightning. Entirely instrumental, it is a setting to music of H.P. Lovecraft's book of the same name (though different spelling).

I must admit my ignorance to the individuals.....it was hard enough for me to remember who is/was the lead singer of ACDC.....(I know nothing, lol). I just like the group. And I never watch videos, so I never know who's singing.....now, back when the Beatles were playing, I, of course, could tell their voices apart, etc.

I actually like the "Eminem Show" album. I bought it. Old white guy listening to it must be funny to the teenagers, heh.

For my information...while I've only registered here at FR back in January, I've been browsing here since near after 9/11, how the heck are you quoting with Italics? HTML tags [i] don't seem to work. This place needs a FAQ. I use the USENET standard >> << but can't for the life of me figure out the FR standard. heh. Help appreciated.
