Arabs, Muslims Report U.S. Hate Crimes

Muslim, Arab and Sikh groups say reports of backlash crimes are trickling in, and they fear an increase if the war in Iraq (news - web sites) drags on.

Advocates who track such incidents say they've heard about a dozen potential hate crimes — most involving verbal harassment or property damage to Arabs, Muslims and Sikhs — since the war began last week.

"The longer the war goes on and the higher the number of American casualties there, I think probably you can make a correlation there would be more hate crimes and harassment against Arab-Americans and those perceived to be," said Laila Al-Qatami, a spokeswoman for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

Among the incidents, bottles rigged to explode with dry ice and water were tossed into the back yard of a Christian Iraqi-American family in Phoenix, and in Burbank, Ill., an explosive device was thrown into a Muslim family's van, destroying it. Police were investigating whether the cases are hate crimes.

At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, someone scrawled "Suicide bomb yourselves" in permanent marker on a display board at the Muslim Student Association's offices. In Eugene, Ore., a man was charged with a hate crime after he approached a Sikh woman's car and pointed both index fingers at her, pretending to shoot.

The Sikh Coalition has placed ads in Punjabi-language media urging people to report incidents. After the Sept. 11 attacks, Sikhs were mistakenly associated with Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) because they wear turbans and grow beards as signs of their faith.

"People are misinformed about who Sikhs are," said Harpreet Singh, the coalition's director of community relations, adding that someone spit on his car as he drove recently from New York to Washington, D.C.

Earlier this week, two teenagers were charged with committing a hate crime for allegedly smashing a window at a Villa Park, Ill., mosque as about 100 people prayed inside on March 11.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has distributed "safety kits" to mosques, community leaders and others with tips on preventing hate crimes, developing relationships with law enforcement, safeguarding legal rights and responding to anti-Muslim incidents.

Some mosques have canceled activities and are carefully watching newcomers, said Omar Haydar, executive director of the council's Chicago chapter.

"It's unfortunate," he said. "The mosque is supposed to make people feel welcome, not someplace where you should be scrutinized."

Advocates agreed the backlash attacks are not comparable to those in the year after the Sept. 11 attacks.

"There are a lot of variables to determine whether or not this will be a severe backlash — how long the war lasts, if there are increasing American casualties, if there are, God forbid, terrorist attacks in retaliation for the war," said Hodan Hassan, a spokeswoman for the council.

Just for everyone's information. Just the other day, I was talking with a fellow out of Austin about a car he had for sale. He said some Pakistanis (generally Muslim) were very abusive towards him about the price of sale. They didn't even want to drive the car and barely inspected it...they just wanted him to sell it for an outrageously low price. I wonder if anyone else has evidence of this sort of thing going on by ANY foreign national living in the U.S. and trying to take advantage of our economic malaise?

The facts are: (1) Nineteen male immigrants of Middle-Eastern descent recently murdered thousands of civilians on our shores in a coordinated attack; (2) other people answering to the same description have been apprehended in the country as suspected co-conspirators; and (3) according to the attorney general, there are more sleeper terrorist cells at large that the government has yet to identify.

Complaints about heightened suspicions toward people who fit the description of fanatical Islamists go well beyond opposing indiscriminate hate. It is a demand that Americans not even have their antennae up.

Focusing on men of Middle-Eastern appearance is less "profiling" than suspect identification. It is in keeping with the standard police practice of not looking for people over 6 feet tall when the eyewitnesses tell you the perp is 5 feet 2 inches. When looking for the Unabomber, I promise you – the FBI wasn't rousting Asians or Arabs.

As unfair as it sounds, deporting immigrants from suspect countries will actually minimize cruelties toward vast numbers of vaguely Arabic-looking people. Although many immigrants will be swept up unfairly, all the Sikhs, Hindus and Arab Christians will be relieved to discover they don't scare people anymore.

Those of us who live in urban communities with large Muslim populations see little to no evidence of solidarity with Americans in our war against Islamic fundamentalist terrorism.

I doubt whether Muslims in general will ever assimilate to the political ideals of this republic. Theirs is not even a dual allegiance. Instead, it's a supra-national allegiance to Islam, to which all secular government arrangements are subordinate and liberal democracy is anathema.

Don't expect the American Muslim community take to the "American street" in an unequivocal display of patriotism. Their allegiance aligns squarely with the "Arab street."

Given that anger physically vented at Muslims in America is nearly non-existent in stark contrast to the Muslim tyranny toward others worldwide, one has to wonder about the motives of CAIR. Their idea of relations is to condemn Americans worldwide and accept no responsibility for the savage behavior by Muslims. This is the perverse way Islam makes inroads to a just society. America needs to rethink its lax position on religion. It needs to identify Islam not as a religion steeped in a mystical quest or as a moral basis for a code of conduct, but rather a means for gangsters to acquire position over others. These are gangsters wearing clerics robes.

Never before has the world seen an ideology where mullahs, imams, ayatollahs, and the like get their earthly rewards of followers, multiple wives, and gifts with masses who blindly submit to their will. Rather than leading by example, they lead by decree and fatwas enforced by brutes. In Islamic society slavery is the norm. In Pakistan, children are sold to merchants to weave rugs. In Sudan Christian and animist children are stolen and kept as slaves by Muslims. This month in Egypt, Muslims who murdered Christian Copts several years ago in a riot were released while a Christian who killed a Muslim is kept in prison. One can find Islamic brutality toward the Infidels over the entire globe.

Since its beginning, Islam has been a scourge. It always will be so. The Sharia strain is structured on a singular path, total conquest. The Minor varieties such the Dervish and the Dhruze are alien to the Sharia belief. They will become absorbed in the Sharia by brute force in the end.

The only force that survives in the Islamic state is anything more brutal than Islam, for example Baathists in the case of Sadaam. Only violence can withstand Islam. If that is the case, then America should see Islam objectively for what it is. Falling short of outlawing Islam in America, America should overtly and with great pronouncement outlaw those aspects of Islam that are at odds with America. Some things that need to be made explicit are those sayings in the Koran that give Muslims a preference or special identity.

Prohibit the teaching of the condemnation of Jews and Christians.
Prohibit women from wearing veils in public.
Prohibit men from having more than one wife, even those Saudi prices visiting the US.
Prohibit the teaching in public schools of Islam as a misunderstood benevolent religion.
Prohibit Islam in our prisons where it is recruiting terrorists.
Prohibit public officials from lying that Islam is a religion of peace.

This list is by far too short.

America needs to force a conversion of thought onto the Sharia based Islam within America as it is totally alien to long-held American beliefs. Some misguided Americans thinking Islam has yet to go through its Protestant reformation are delirious. What could they possibly mean? Medieval Catholicism had it brutal moments as it thrived in a society of brutes – the warrior barons, dukes, and kings – and not because it thrived in representative governments elected by the governed. Until the Muslim masses can see a better life under secular rule, they will continue to live a savage, impoverished existence. This is the last thing America needs.
