Suspect in Attack on Army Back in U.S.

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) -- A U.S. soldier suspected of a deadly grenade attack on his own comrades in the 101st Airborne Division in Kuwait is back in the United States, Army officials said Saturday.

Hasan Akbar, 32, arrived in the U.S. on Friday, after being held in a detention facility in Germany, according to a statement from Fort Campbell, home of the 101st.

The Army had previously said Akbar's first name was Asan, though family members had insisted all along that he spelled it Hasan.

The statement, released Saturday, did not indicate where Akbar was being held in the U.S., or if he had returned to Fort Campbell. "He is being held while preliminary legal proceedings take place," the statement said.

Akbar is the only person being held in the grenade attack that killed two U.S. officers and wounded 14 other soldiers on March 23. Last week he was transferred from Kuwait to the military detention center in Mannheim, Germany.

A military judge found probable cause that Akbar committed the attack, the Army said. Akbar has still not been formally charged with any offense, the statement said.

Military legal experts have said it's possible Akbar could be charged with intentional murder, one count of attempted murder for everyone in the tent during the attack and aggravated assault.

Officials are still investigating the attack, which killed Army Capt. Christopher Scott Seifert, 27, of Easton, Pa., and Air Force Maj. Gregory Stone, 40, of Boise, Idaho.

Calling Johnny Cochran, calling Al Sharpton, calling Jesse Jacka$$, calling the A.C.L.U., calling Calipso Loui Farakan...and last, but not least...calling Charlie Rangel.

This guy will get the same as Talibananna Johny. They should have shot him firing squad style withing the first 24 hours. Now, I fear we have a media mess on our hands and liberal judges and liberal juries with "compassion" for this poor lost-his-way soul.

This soldier is subject to the UCMJ, NOT civilian criminal courts. He will be tried by a General Courts Martial. Although, he does have the right to retain civilian counsel. You will probably see some big names defending him.

Being that it's wartime and this scumbag will be tried under the UCMJ, Johnny Cochran ain't going to be of much help and you can pretty much bank on a death sentence.

I wonder why they are keeping his US detention location under wraps? I'm surprised this murderer is still alive.

Can't remember where I heard it about two days ago but someone on one of the three cable networks said Akbar was going to Ft. Knox while the Article 32 is conducted.

Are you back, Fred?

The Corps would have just simply shot him on the spot. Just my thoughts.

I predict that it was a big mistake to bring him back to the States. He should have gotten a Field Court Martial in Kuwait and the sentence should have been carried out immediately.

With him back in the States, nothing but a circus will ensue.

After three weeks of intense media treatment this abomination will be given an honorable discharge, a pension, and a $10,000,000 contract with talk shows. He will then be elected to office and rise through the ranks to be a Vice-Presidential candidate. Retiring with heaped with honors a movie will be made of his life. The movie will have a final scene where it is realized that the men he killed were evil oppressors. He will then die-or be immediately translated into heaven-and sit on the right hand of Bill Clinton. Later, he and Bill will come and judge the quick and the dead. Welcome to America 2003 A.D.

I heard a radio report a day or two after his arrest that Sgt. Akbar was going to be court-martialed in Fort Campbell.

Okay, will he be tried in a military court? Is this open to the public or only his only?

OT, for anyone that can answer this. I didn't want to start a new thread but, my daughter works for a Sports Authority store and she told me that 2 swarthy (hehe) looking men came into the store last week, dressed in fatigues, and purchase several boxes of shells. They came back in again, yesterday, and purchased several more. Is there any type of hunting season open now? Does this sound a little suspicious?

Ya know, if he had killed himself, he could have gotten a medal from Saddam and $34,000 for his family. Not too smart, is he?

Yes. She should report it to authorities, and if they come back in for more shells, refuse them if she has authority, get their ID and license plate.

Excuse me, he would have gotten TWO, not one, but TWO medals from Saddam. You know how people hate just getting one medal posthumously.

The one thing she should NOT do is nothing.
If she thinks there is something wierd about the situation, there probably is.

The natural tendency is to shame oneself into brushing of danger or talk oneself out of action.

Every report I have read and heard on TV was that this guy killed our men with a grenade. But it was my understanding that the first young man died of a gunshot wound to the BACK, that he was fired upon as he fled the grenade.

Why is this never mentioned, I wonder? This Akbar fellow shot and murdered at least one of these fine men as they lef the tent.

Well, she did find it weird as did her supervisor, but according to the store, she's only allowed to ask for a telephone number when purchasing shells. She has to ask for ID only if a customer is purchasing BB's or pellets. Very strange. The phone # could be a false one too, but she just left for work and is going to look and see what type of ammo they bought. Both arab men look to be in their 30's, but I have found that middle eastern men tend to look a lot older than they really are. I told her what you just told me..to try and get ID and a plate #.

Thanks.

Why is this perp not dead yet?

He should have been tried and executed in the combat zone. All of the witnesses are there.

Why has the court martial not started yet? He should have a very speedy trial and a speedy execution.
