Legislators Take Another Look at Immigrant Driver's License Measure

A bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain California driver's licenses has resurfaced at the State Capitol.

State Senator Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, is authoring Senate Bill 60, a measure that would allow both legal and illegal immigrants to acquire driver's licenses. Applicants could submit a federal taxpayer identification number in lieu of a Social Security number for documentation.

Last year's version of the same bill was vetoed by Gov. Gray Davis because he wanted more security measures in place. That measure covered only undocumented immigrants in the process of gaining legal status.

Proponents of this year's legislation say requiring a thumbprint, physical description and address are adequate safeguards. They add that licensing more drivers would mean more insured drivers on the road, reducing the cost of uninsured motorist insurance for all drivers.

According to U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service figures, there are more than two million undocumented immigrants of driving age in California.

SB 60 is currently being reviewed by the Senate Transportation Committee. The bill can be read in its entirety by clicking on the link below.

I disagree. California requires that we have insured our cars when we register them. California does not require insurance to get a drivers license, and issuing more drivers licenses would not change the number or rate of insured cars.

I am trying to get my learners permit in NY. About 2 years ago I got my Non Driver ID from the DMV. I used to hold a NYS drivers license but it lapsed. I have to literally jump through hoops to get this damn permit as if I were a criminal. I need SS card and original birth certificate. It does not matter that I have the non driver ID and a record of being a licenced driver in the past. Anyway I had to order a new SS card cause I couldnt find that and then I found out a birth certificate copy is not good nor a hospital registar original is not good.

I am starting to think that the birth certificate thing is to bring in more funds to the state. Cost is 15 bucks plus some 5 in processing.

Truly annoying.

Gilbert Cedillo is rabidly anti-American. He is a former member of the vile seditionist group MEChA, is in cahoots with the most loathsome of vermin in the state of California (Antonio Villaraigosa, Art Torres, Richard Polanco, Nell Soto, Marco Firebaugh -- the slimeball who stuck it to taxpayers by getting a bill that allows illegals to pay in-state college tuition passed --, and other bloodsucking border-jumper cheerleaders), and will do anything he can to try to legitimize the millions of Mexican and other criminal leeches who have literally decimated the state. This Cedillo should be arrested and tried for treason, IMO... or at least be investigated to determine if he's an agent of an enemy nation (namely Mexico). I say he's guilty as charged.

No way should anyone illegally in the country get any form of legitimate identification..... nothing but the boot, in fact. Aiding and abetting illegal aliens is a felony. The Bush administration should have done something to stop this BS nationwide after 9/11/01.

Just waiting for the "Shock and Awe" of 9/11 to wear off before pushing the illegal agenda again.. You know, globalism, open borders, amnesty, and all of that.

Hey, I guess if this passes, we can break any law we please and still be treated as a law abiding citizen....What utter horse crap....

It'll be all over when another 10 million illegals enter the United States...

And to think the Californians pass prop 187 a few years ago only to have the government declare the election illegal...

If this isn't a conspiracy, nothing is..Is there anyone out there that believes this is all an accident? LOL.....

The real question is, what are the goals of this conspiracy? What's the end game?

American citizenship is meaningless when you can obtain one of those Mexican ID cards. No need for a driver's license or Social Security card. Gov't institutions and businesses regard the Mexican ID cards as valid forms of ID.

It will be very satisfying to vote against that guy and the entire regime in '04. I just wish it could be sooner. Like tomorrow.

Bush may be less than happy with Mexico's betrayal of us. I saw this in the Mexican newspaper yesterday ---Bush is calling them on their human rights abuses ---including torture of Mexican citizens by the Mexican army.

Bush lost me when he ignored the border after September 11. He's still ignoring it. I think he's filling this country up with Mexicans so they'll all vote for his nephew when the time comes, to keep the Bush lineage alive in the White House.
