re: the pic of the British tracked vehicle firing a "Sidewinder" missile. That doesn't look like like the slender Sidewinder missile carried by U.S. aircraft (often on the wingtips of F-16 and F-18 aircraft). Excellent post! Thanks for the ping - of course these masks are Russian type - who else other than our "friends"? Ruck Fussia.

What I want to see is what (or who) the Russians have in their embassy in Baghdad. That is the only safe place to hide valuable things there. Too many signals that they are hiding someone important - like Saddam or his sons.

Brilliant collection, as usual. Can anyone get an up close picture at what is on the wall of these weapons rooms? And the WMD proof. Can anyone list what has been found so far? Gas masks, atropine, anything else? We know they have TONS - and that most of it is likely underground - or shipped OUT of the country. We MUST turn these up. We MUST. Where oh where are these tons?

I noticed the same error. The Sidewinder is an air-to-air missile, although I think it is used as surface-to-air in some configurations.

That's most likely a TOW missile (surface-to-surface) -- wire guided by the launcher.

I would love to have one of those funky helmets!

Speaking as a novice milsurp gear collector, the web gear in the photo where you pose the question of origination looks like some czech gear I've seen. Could be russian too, but the color is wrong (I think).

And yes, I did notice the crop circle. Maybe those reports of Saddam having Alien WMDs is not just imagination? There is that helmet, after all....=)

Just a nit-pick:

British heroes fire sidewinder missile at an Iraqi bunker.

Unless there's something I don't know about--quite possible--a "sidewinder" missile is an air-to-air weapon, not ground-to-ground.

Diogenesis - As alwasy great photos.

JL - The Sidewinder configuration for surface to air was the Chapparral. It was phased out of the US Army about 10 years ago. The Brit system shown is not a TOW, but some other system. I am not familiar with British missile systems so will not guess.

Ok, I'm jealous. It takes me about ten minutes of comparing pictures to find the right name for the weapons. I have a photographic mind for stuff that I actually own but I can't tell one machine gun from another. I still can't figure out exactly what a SAW really looks like and they hang so many electronic sights and stuff on them, they're buried with the stuff.

The machine gun is a Russian PK - 7.62 X 54R It was the first general purpose machine gun introduced into service so it's an old design. I think I also noticed the belt enters on the right side instead of the left.

Low tech:

An Iraqi Kurd peshmerga fighter looks at an Iraqi distance guide for heavy artillery with the name of his village marked in territory newly acquired by Kurds after a defensive retreat by Iraqi government forces south west of Arbil, northern Iraq, April 2, 2003. U.S. Marines bombarded Kut, a key city on the Tigris river, on Wednesday, in what appeared to be a renewed advance toward the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
