Pro-troops rally at site of historic anti-war demo 27 minutes ago
BY DEEPTI HAJELA, Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK - Thirty-five years ago this month, the Low Library at Columbia University was the center of a protest storm as about 1,000 people barricaded themselves inside campus buildings for a week to demonstrate against the Vietnam War.
On Wednesday, amid a growing backlash over a professor's recent anti-war remarks, the library plaza was home to another rally this one supporting the coalition waging war in Iraq.
Onlookers gathered to watch the speakers at the one-hour rally organized by the campus' Conservative Club, College Republicans and the Students United for America. About 70 student participants stood on the steps of the library, holding flags and listening to the speeches.
"The students of Columbia University stand behind the men and women who defend this great nation," said Megan Romigh, a senior and president of the College Republicans.
About 40 anti-war students showed up, holding up signs a short distance from the pro-war faction, which at one point tried to block them from the view of photographers.
In April 1968, students angered by Columbia's links to an institute that commissioned military research, among other things, took over five buildings. The activity gained widespread news coverage, with famous protesters like Tom Hayden and Stokely Carmichael making appearances. After a week, police were called, and they made close to 700 arrests.
Last week, at an anti-war teach-in, Columbia professor Nicholas De Genova told thousands of students and faculty that he would like to see "a million Mogadishus" referring to the 1993 ambush in Somalia that killed 18 Americans.
De Genova, also called for the defeat of U.S. forces in Iraq and said Americans who call themselves "patriots" are white supremacists. The 35-year-old anthropology teacher has since maintained a low profile.
The school, while saying the professor was exercising his right to free speech, has distanced itself from his comments.

We actually had quite a few more than 70 student. Most became an audience behind the press. There were only 2 dozen protestors. Still, it was a great sucess.
The commies had to try to piggyback to get attention.

Great job. Pictures, we need pictures. ;)
The school, while saying the professor was exercising his right to free speech, has distanced itself from his comments.
How do you distance yourself from something an employee of yours said at a company function? Inquiring minds would like to know.
To: rmlew
The sky is actually falling. I can see it coming down.

This was where that professor made the reference to the wish for a "Million Mogidishus". That reminds me of:
Here is a link to the SF-IMC site where these FAR LEFT LIBERALS posted an actual pic (below) of one of their Support Saddam/Terrorists events recently and changed the image when I posted/linked it to an FR thread. The pic at the top of that link (of 2 Allied Soldiers TORTURING someone) was what they changed it to . . .

These folks at San Francisco Indy-Media are terrorist supporters . . .
Oh, the lurkers on FR from SF-IMC CANNOT change that picture (above) now since it is hosted by FR friendly sources ! Take that, FOOLS !! . . .

GREAT JOB! I heard about this on the radio news here in Idaho. That report said there were 200 of you.
Please read this thread HERE about De Genova.
A significant email and phone-in campaign is underway to him and the President of the University. Several Alumni have joined in and are contacting all alumni and trustees urging them to cut-off donations until De Genova is fired.
They are feeling the heat.
best Fregards.

Good work!
I remember when I used to daily walk across the yard at Colombia going to and from the subway on Broadway to get over to 115th between Amsterdam and Morningside.
That was 1985 or so and the school wasn't terribly political then.
I think that was the IRT??

Until De Genova gets a blanket party and fired, Columbia will still be anti US.
To: rmlew
GOOD JOB!!! Please offer my congratulations to ALL Columbia patriots brave enough to challenge the status quo at "Moscow in Morningside."
You guys should have then led a commando raid on the West End, which has been a Marxist enclave since Ginsburg and Kerouac hung out there.

Back in '91, a friend of mind started SMASH (Students Mobilized Against Saddam Hussein) at Columbia. It was a huge hit and he was on the morning TV shows, and something like 100 chapter were started around the nation. Perhaps you guys should consider re-founding the group.
