It's funny how most of you seem to willingly miss little statements like this one: In 1991 both generals backed the GKChP, (the State Committee for the State of Emergency, set up by a group of Gorbachev opponents with the goal of supplanting him and preventing the disintegration of the USSR) and were consequently dismissed from military service.

These guys are retired.
Your question might be worth looking into, but more likely, it's a bunch of folks who are seeking to supplement meager pensions (caused by the collapse of the ruble) with hard currency.
If I were Saddam, I'd be asking for my money back if I were capable of doing so. Unfortunately, making that call could invite the professional attention of the 49th Fighter Wing - AGAIN.

Sure, but we're not fighting Russians (right now, anyway). If Iraq is using Soviet advice, it's a proxy war. And we're winning.
