LYNN, Mass. (AP) The principal of Lynn English High School stopped a teacher from showing the Oscar-winning documentary ''Bowling for Columbine,'' saying it was inappropriate because it contains anti-war messages.

English teacher Jeremy McKeen showed 17- and 18-year-old students the movie, which was directed and produced by Michael Moore and released well before the war in Iraq began. The movie has a strong anti-gun and anti-violence theme. While accepting this year's Oscar for Best Documentary, Moore expressed his disdain for President Bush and the war with Iraq.

When I was in high school, we never saw Hollywood movies in the classroom. Why is that happening now? I think it's a combination of liberal indoctrination and teachers being too lazy or hung over to actually teach something. It's a lot easier to just sit the tykes in front of the TV and read a book.

Actually, that could be good if he stopped it a few key points, like just before Charlton Heston's speech, and asked students to look closely at the curtain before which Heston was speaking.

Only too true. I'm in my last semester, and after 4 looong years of being the only conservative in most of my classes, I'm glad its over!!! I've thought about graduate school (even considered law school for a few fleeting minutes) but I've decided there is no way I'd survive it w/o killing a liberal or two.

I don't know what it has to do with English 101, however. English seems to be a catch-all subject today -- everything from sexual orientation to whatever.

English 101 used to be about the nuts-and-bolts of writing, covering such topics as sentence structure, paragraph development, and the like. Apparently, that is no longer true.

Good point - the principal did the right thing. But one must ask whether the principal would have forbidden the propaganda film from being shown had it not been for the war. I suspect not.

Perhaps if one were to write to the school, one might both commend the principal's actions and gently remind him that "documentaries" based on falshoods and half-truths aren't of great educational value unless the purpose of education is to hide the truth. Perhaps a few citations to actual research might be convincing as well.
