Urban sprawl? When towns with 10,000 population are 120 miles apart, urban gets a queation mark, but sprawl?
Most cities put enough money in one new interchange to pave one of these towns.

BINGO!

This is total stupidity. We moved to a rural area in 1994, and have jobs to help support what will be our retirement home in a few years, God willing. Think Congress will grant us money in back reparations?

I sometimes dream of a cherry tele-commute job, so could move even more rural than I am now.
As to this subsidy I say:
Nooo-ooo-oooo-ooo-oo-o!
If want urbania, I will drive to it. I don't like the idea of paying urban types to come infect rural culture.

>>>>>>The down side is the gossip>>>>> You can say that again! My husbands uncle was an alcoholic & lived on our ranch. The town gossip was that I was married to a terrible drunk & we had to keep him locked up out at the ranch. The drunk uncle was in his 50's my husband was 30. I don't know who they though that young man I was hanging out with was. LOL I guess that was another story.
I wasn't the only person that was the object of gossip. The doctors nurse talked about which young girls got pregnant, the bank tellers discussed your bank account, the lawyers secretaries talked about the coming divorces & don't even ask me about the courthouse!

My husband and I heartily agree - we are both from small towns in PA and would LOVE to go back, but his job is very city oriented, so for now we are stuck in West Sodom - I mean - New Jersey.

Yeah, we know city people are armed. We hear about it all the time.
We are too, armed to the teeth, but you don't read about it in the papers or see it on the nightly news. Check out the crime stats on my state, which is predominantly rural. Most of that happens in three cities.
If we aren't on the same planet, maybe we can quarrantine yours.
To: NotJustAnotherPrettyFace
I disagree. If you ask any anti-sprawl Nazi they will tell you 'sprawl' is defined as the relocation of any person from any city to any rural area. The rural area does not have to be contiguous to a city ot town.

Jobs in Wal-Mart are fine. But how many small towns can support a Wal-Mart?
BTW, I agree with you that the loss of small stores when Wal-Marts arrive is horrible, but I haven't seen anything that says that the number of jobs is much less after that. Wal-Marts mostly hire locals - the ones who lost their jobs because the Wal-Mart arrived.
To: speekinout
I was being sarcastic with the Wal-Mart remark. I hate Wal-Mart because they kill small town businesses. Wal-Marts draw from a larger area not just one small town. Because they carry everything at lower prices people will drive miles for one stop shopping.

Greeeeen Acres is the place for me
To: Ditter
I also hate Wal-Mart. I've refused to shop in one. But they are popular, people shop there, and they hire locals.
The ones who lose are the small business owners. The people I think we can least afford to lose, but the employees just move over to Wal-Mart.
To: speekinout
but the employees just move over to Wal-Mart. The owner can apply for a managerial position as well. It's just hard to work for someone esle after you've been your own boss, but (s)he can.

It's just hard to work for someone esle after you've been your own boss, but (s)he can. That's the truth. But most people who have had their own businesses only work for someone else until they see a new opportunity to start another business. And they usually find it.
These people are the core of our economy.
